On Friday afternoon, after a 9 day trial, the verdict for the 9 activists accused of criminal damage as a result of the Brighton Uncut action at Top Shop on the 4th December last year, will be announced. That day 8 activists super-glued themselves inside the windows of the shop (where they remained for around 4 hours) while a demonstration took place outside. In total 21 people (out of a total of around 50 people who took part) were arrested that day, with many people kettled and arrested outside the shop.

Fracking Demo: Frack Off Cuadrilla

21-09-2011 22:55

Anti-fracking protesters congregate outside the press conference in Blackpool held by Cuadrilla Resources as they announce the results of their drilling for shale gas tests in Lancashire, holding a massive Frack Off banner and chanting abuse at the company through a megaphone...

Today Cuadrilla announced that they've found 200 trillion cubic feet of gas held in rocks under the ground, which is 10 times more than UK reserves in the North Sea. Not all of this can be 'fracked' out - a process which involves pumping millions of gallons of water, sand and chemicals in order to crack rock 9,000ft underground (for more info see frack-off.org) - but Mark Miller (toxic water spiller) CEO of Cuadrilla says "We're equivalent to - or exceeding - the gas per square mile that you'd find in the really successful plays in the US."

Fracking has been a major disaster in the US with the industry booming massively over the last several years without intervention, leading to a series of catastrophes relating to water contamination, toxic spills, blow outs, water you can set on fire, and more pollution into the biosphere, mainly methane.

Cuadrilla already has plans for 400 gas wells, across 40 sites, with its current exploration license granted by the government, which covers the Bowland shale between Blackpool and Preston. If all goes well for the company, we could be looking at tens of thousands of gas rigs in Lancashire alone, that's 20-30 per square mile.

Fracking is the thin end of the wedge in the drive to suck the last and most difficult to reach drops of fuel from the planet. The scramble for unconventional sources of gas is the beginning of the end of our finite resources (along with: tar sands, mountain top removal, deep water drilling, coal bed methane etc etc).

Fracking must be stopped.

Nothing will happen without pressure. Get informed, get organised and take action.

Update on Land & Freedom Camp + location details

17-09-2011 19:56

The camp started today with over 40 people joining in. The day started with a circle where people introduced themselves and their campaigns and started a discussion about land, ownership and freedom. (Reports and pics to follow) Rain brought the discussion to an end and a shelter was constructed where people chatted, sang, shared food and shared ideas for the week ahead. It was agreed that the camp would move to outside the church on the corner of Clapham Common Northside and The Pavement.

This is an update on the Land & Freedom Camp: a 7 day open exhibition and demonstration taking place on Clapham Common from Sat 17th Sept til Sun 25th Sept. The aim of the camp is to highlight the issue of the economics of land ownership and the politics and laws regarding the use of the land locally and globally. We want to communicate the myriad of effects that the current system has including:

  •  the almost complete restriction of access to land to live (and grow) autonomously and sustainably by common people in the UK and around the world due to laws governing use of the land and/or economic domination of it by the few (despite there being over 5 acres of land for every human being on earth)

  • the ensuing effect of artificial scarcity of available land that the restriction of access creates: driving up the cost of housing and reducing it's availability in both cities and the rural areas. This creates a slave culture where people struggle to make end's meet in crammed urban environments or as for the most of the world's population even to put food in their mouths.

  • the modern legacy of political structures that serve the interests of the land owning establishment which have been previously constructed through history by the same priveleged group.

  • the laws and land grabs which these structures continue to push forward dispossessing people locally and globally: whether it be the UK Gov's agenda to ban squatting, evicting people from their land (Dale Farm) or as in Africa with the forced dispossession of people from the land they depend on for their survival.

  • the completely undemocratic, unsustainable and dangerous control of the natural resources by private corporations for profit, monopolising production of humanities bare necessities: food, fuel, water and so on. The result: food scarcity, destruction of eco-systems, climate change, peak oil etc...

Event: Land & Freedom Camp.
Location: Bandstand, Clapham Common.
Map link: http://bit.ly/nqXhOS
Transport: Clapham Common tube. Buses from Clapham Junction.
Contact: 07963 475 195 for any questions.

On Sunday there will be a stall with info and a meeting to plan action and the strategy for the camp for the week.

Camp Frack Update

17-09-2011 08:00

The tents are up, the sun is shining, the porridge is hot!

OK, we're lying about the sun, though we did see a weak glimmer coming over the horizon earlier. Just as the solar panel roadies were getting their hi-vis jackets on the pounding rain returned... bring your wellies!

But, seriously, it's brightening up, and campers are moving about the field adjusting guy ropes, peering hopefully at the windmill, and clutching warm drinks provided from the kitchen.

The mornng meeting has been re-adjusted to a 9.00 a.m. start so even if you set off now you'll probably miss it and the more exciting parts of the day's activities will just be getting going by the time you arrive.

There's a pleasant mix of seasoned campaigners  re-acquainting themselves and local first-timers getting involved in this eco-lark now that the craziness has shown up on theirown  doorsteps.

Come on down, you know you want to!

http://www.campaigncc.org/campfrack

Saturday's activities look a bit like this:

11:30am – Fracking Campaign Round Up A round up of the various fracking campaigns going on across the UK.

12:30pm – LUNCH

2:00pm - 3:00pm – Workshops

   • All About Fracking (Frack Off)

   • Local Groups (an opportunity for local groups to get together to network and plan)

   • Gasland (film showing)

3:00pm - 4:00pm – Workshops

   • Direct Action & Fracking (Frack Off)

   • Gasland (film showing – continued)

There is additional marquee space between 2pm and 4pm which has been left for improvised workshops and for planning groups to make use of.

4:00pm – BREAK

4:30pm – How Do We Work Together? Camp wide workshop on what we can do to stop fracking nationally and how we can form a broad front rather than disparate campaigns.

6:30pm – END OF DAY

Dinner & socialising
