Bare-cheeked protesters plan to bushwhack Dubya

By Stephen Naysmith

CAMPAIGNERS hope to halt an as yet unannounced visit to Britain by President George W Bush this autumn, by giving him the bum's rush.

Tim Ireland, the organiser of the web-based campaign "Bare Your Bum at Bush" is calling for thousands of UK citizens to pledge to undermine the visit by "mooning" at the American leader at every opportunity.

He argues that this would prevent positive photo-opportunities and register protest against Britain's close co-operation with US foreign policy.

Ireland, creator of the internet site Bloggerheads, waged a 10-month war of attrition against Tony Blair which is widely credited with forcing the Prime Minister to fulfil a long-standing pledge to create a way for voters to e-mail him.

Concerned that the 2001 promise appeared to be being broken, Ireland set up his own false e-mail address, which was soon receiving hundreds of messages from those who believed it to be real. At one stage, Downing Street requested that Ireland used his own judgement
to selectively forward e-mails which might require attention.
Finally, in August 2003, Number 10 set up its own facility.

Ireland's latest project was initiated when US First Lady Laura Bush appeared to let slip that a visit to Britain was being scheduled for later this year, and would include a visit to the House of Lords. The IT consultant, based in Surrey, argues that Bush has already cancelled one visit to Britain prior to the war on Iraq for fear of a negative reception. By organising visible opposition via the internet, he hopes to achieve the same outcome again.

If Bush's arrival cannot be halted, he hopes every possible photograph and TV news item will be spoilt by the naked backside of a dissenter.

"If he comes, he's going to go for those photo-opportunities of happy crowds welcoming him, and George W Bush doesn't deserve it. I'd like to rob him of that propaganda device," Ireland said, but added that this was a secondary goal. "I'd rather do more than just subvert it - I'd like him to cancel it. I've been calling on people to put their
hands up and say, `If he turns up in my town, I'd be willing to bare my bottom.'

" The campaign has already gathered momentum with nearly 100 other internet sites linking to Ireland's plans. He believes many people in Britain share his dislike of Bush. He said: "I wanted to arrange something that shows a complete lack of respect . He doesn't deserve to be President because he wasn't voted in. He is doing a terrible job of it and dragged us into this god- forsaken illegal war."Ireland insisted he is just a concerned citizen with a "general intolerance for bullshit".

His site calls on viewers to pledge to take part in the cheeky action, with different levels of involvement. He urges people to write to their local or national newspaper and "inform them that you are a British citizen and fully intend to do your civic duty and bare your arse at George W Bush".

Ireland has also produced a poster featuring Blair and Bush embracing while wrapped in the Stars and Stripes, with the word "arse!" in capital letters. He wants members of the public to wave the poster if they see Bush. He added: "Every time you see the man on TV, you just can't help but scream the word `arse'.

"At the House of Lords visit, Ireland hopes to organise a massmooning along the lines of the flash-mob craze. "The dream would be to get a lord to do it - there's nothing wrong with a little ambition.

"There are going to be barriers, and police are very good at controlling crowds, but what are they going to search people for? This could happen anywhere, at any time. If enough people have the idea that they could bare their bum, some will surely have the opportunity. What is more, they will have all the equipment they need on them.

"If we get enough support, this will succeed because it will be a symptom of public feeling in general. If it isn't symptomatic of public opinion it will fail," he conceded.

Ireland said he had support from both sides of the Atlantic and that Scots were especially welcome. "I can't think of anything better than a kilt to help make this work," he said.

The Foreign Office refused to confirm that Bush was to visit. "I can't confirm it at the moment, not officially," a press spokeswoman said.

She also declined to comment on the Bare Your Bum at Bush campaign.
