Just for Laughs to host World Stupidity Awards™
Nominations now open

The second annual World Stupidity Awards, recognizing achievement in stupidity, will take place at Just For Laughs-the world©ˆs largest comedy festival this year.

"We're stupefied," said Albert Nerenberg of the Main Organization Revealing Obvious Numbskulls (MORON), who declared nominations open on BBC radio Saturday night. "You can't get any bigger than this. Stupidity is finally getting the recognition it deserves."

The World Stupidity Awards will be a media event, as well as a live comedy event this July 23rd featuring an array of high-profile comics, presenting the awards along with special guests at the Spectrum in downtown Montreal.

Five more awards have been added this year and nominations are now open. Anyone can be nominated in one of these 11 categories although public figures are more likely to be nominated. Nominees will be judged by experts in the field, "a bunch of idiots" say organizers and overseen by MORON. All nominations can be submitted by anyone at www.stupidityawards.com

This is the second year for the Stupidity Awards, which ignited a firestorm of media attention last year, when former Iraqi Information Minister, Saeed al-Sahaf won the Stupidest Person in the World category and U.S. President George W. Bush won the Stupidity Award for Reckless Endangerment of the Planet.

The 2004 World Stupidity Awards categories include:

1) Stupidest Man of the Year
2) Stupidest Woman of the Year
3) Stupidest Country of the Year
4) Stupidest Trend of the Year
5) Media outlet which has made the greatest contribution to furthering ignorance worldwide
6) Stupidity Award for Reckless Endangerment of the Planet
7) Stupidest Movie of the Year
8) Stupidest TV Show of the Year
9) Stupidest Act of the Year
10) Stupidest Statement of the Year
11) Lifetime Achievement Award for Stupidity

Nominees will be announced this spring and the winners will be awarded the coveted Golden Dunce Cap (100% Fools Gold) at a formal black tie awards show this summer. Nominees will be invited to attend. "Just For Laughs is the perfect venue for the awards," said Nerenberg. "This is meant to be lighthearted and fun. The reason for the awards is that we're all human, we©ˆre all stupid sometimes, but some of us just need to have it pointed out."

Just for Laughs

The Just For Laughs Festival is the world's largest and most prestigious comedy event. Each summer, stars from around the globe gather to perform at the Festival©ˆs various shows. The Festival features gala performances at the St. Denis theatre, as well as dozens of club shows at venues around the city, theatrical presentations, comedic films, free open-air shows, and an industry marketplace. Last summer over 1000 artists from 19 countries including Israel, Japan, New Zealand and the United States performed for over 1.7 million people for 11 days at over 2000 shows. Just For Laughs produces numerous Television shows seen on networks and airlines around the world.

The World Stupidity Awards

The World Stupidity Awards were created in the year 2003 to salute achievement in ignorance and stupidity. The awards were developed when researchers on the hit film Stupidity discovered there were no award shows to recognize the living stupid and the monumentally ignorant. Organizers of the World Stupidity Awards look forward to the day when the awards will no longer be necessary.
