Campaign to Smash Edo

southcoast imc | 15.01.2005 16:56 | Smash EDO | Anti-militarism | Iraq | Repression | South Coast

Smash Edo is a group of people campaigning to remove EDO MBM Technology Ltd from Brighton. EDO MBM is a subsidary of the multinational arms manufacturing company, EDO Corporation. At EDO MBM's factory on Home Farm Road, Moulescoombe, they are manufacturing bomb racks, release clips, arming mechanisms and targeting equipment; all of which has been used in the recent Iraq invasion. The campaign wants to shut down EDO MBM through raising awareness and direct action (Read more).

The campaign has been active for some time now. From Sunday 29th August to Thursday 2nd September there was a 5 day protest camp, with daily protests and a non violent direct action day. See reports [1] [2]. Several actions have taken place: Reports: [1] [2], and [Indymedia UK feature]. Recently there was a public meeting, and every thurday at 4.00 there is a Bring The Noise Demo, at Edo factory, Home Farm Road, off Lewes Rd. There have been several arrests, and in December 2004 six activists were fined a total of £1500 to be paid by the end of January. Currently several other activists are on trial for aggravated trespass - for a roof occupation. See [Press release] [Report]

Website Hacked

23.01.2005 11:47

You may have noticed that the website has been hacked. Legal threats have been abandoned in favour of letting school kids loose on the site. I guess it's cheaper - just a few free jars of Clearasil and some porn mags and they're up for anything. Does show we're getting to them again...

Unfortunately we do not have the means to secure this site as we are reliant on others to do this but a new and bigger site is already on its way...

Surely you mean cracked ;)

09.02.2005 07:37

I find it very interesting that the site was cracked. That's quite a brazen thing to do if EDO did it.

Can you please send /any/ info you have related to the crack to  imc-uk-legal@lists.indymedia.org ? If you have tech details please send them along as well so UK can protect against a similar attack.

Thanks,

-Jeff

Letter to EDO

16.03.2005 11:55

Meet there at 10am if you're coming...

To the Directors of EDO (UK) Ltd:

Dear Sirs,
We write to inform you that we intend to visit your premises at Home Farm Road,
Brighton on the 21st March 2005 for the purpose of inspecting the manufacture of
your military related components.
We are citizens concerned about possible breaches of the International Criminal
Court Act. We believe we are entitled to know what is being manufactured in our
city, for the reasons outlined below.
Firstly, our money contributes to your business, both from UK MoD contracts and
from government subsidies. As taxpayers, we need to satisfy ourselves that our
taxes are spent legally and usefully.
The effects of the use of your products destabilises the security situation so
affects our own safety. That is, when bombs are dropped overseas, people resent
it and some will launch attacks back at the countries from where the bombs came.
For example, there has been a definite pattern of revenge attacks in Israel and
Palestine.
This concern for our own safety is not meant to overshadow or belittle our great
concern for civilians and conscripted soldiers in the countries where your
products are used. Thousands have been killed and maimed in Iraq, for example,
where you claim your products have been used. We hear of many cases where
civilians and civilian infrastructure are bombed, to the extent it is systematic
war crimes. We need to ensure you are not assisting in these war crimes.
There have been many other citizens’ inspections carried out before at military
bases and weapons establishments both in the UK and abroad. We hope you’ll
co-operate fully, in the spirit of accountability.
We very much look forward to meeting you and inspecting your facilities. We
regret we can’t confirm how many citizens will come.
Yours sincerely,
Sussex Citizens’ Inspection Agency
