SPONTAINIOUS ANTI G8 MARCH THROUGH LEEDS

kit | 06.07.2005 22:27 | G8 2005 | Globalisation | Social Struggles

we all assembeled outside the city gallerey, with banners placards, loudhailers ect.........

wow. ive just got back from leeeds (west yorks.) ive been in leeds all day and attended 3 demmos against the g8 and part of the MPH campaing, but the last one realy stuck with me.

we all assembeled outside the city gallerey, with banners placards, loudhailers ect. and listend to speeches and chanted. no cops showed up gr8. the last speech (given by a leeds school student who did a fantastic job) finished with, "now lets go and make some noise in leeds" at which we all left the art gallery and marched arround leeds with our banners, chanting and whistling. we got some great reactions from people in leeds with people waving, claping, showing white bands ect. and many people joined the march and boosted the numbers (not sure quite how many people) and we carried on making up a route as we went. not a single cop, we just marched down the road.

it was fantastic and spontainious.

i hope it gets media coverage, and anybody whit photos can you post them please.....

thanks
kit.

the young people and the unexpectedness of the march made it one of the best demonstrations i've ever been on. it shows you what activists are capable of without the police: there was no riot, no loss of life, just a group of friendly activists taking back their streets. the public reacted really well too, there was very little hostility and many people cheered or clapped as we marched past, perhaps LCAW should make a policy of not informing the police...

Not Spontaneous and a total embarassment

25.07.2005 09:34

I was at the G8 rally. The march through leeds was anything but spontaneous members of the SWP spent ten minutes talking the school student through exactly what to say to wind up his speech with a call for a march through town.

The reason there were no police was that the rally was so small -about 70 people in total. The march was futile. No police means no-one stopping the traffic. You should try marching up the wrong side of the headrow with taxis and buses hurtling towards you, this might be ok with 10,000 protestors but with so few it was futile, certainly nothing to be celebrated.

Why do people bother to come on indymedia and write misleading articles like the above. We read enough lies in the bourgeois media without telling them to ourselves.
