'Stop the Arms Trade, Shut Down DSEi, Stop Making Murder Profitable'

un | 17.08.2005 08:03 | DSEi 2005 | Anti-militarism | Repression | Social Struggles | London

Bombs on the underground, bombs in Iraq, guns in Harlesden, Euston, Kings Cross, in the car and under your pillow, destroying the lives of men women and children, and destroying the world in which we live, all sold to you by these nice men and women in suits, who only do this job because, "if I didn't, someone else would"..

Spearhead Exhibitions Ltd organise "the worlds biggest" weapons fair, that runs from 13 - 16 September at London's ExCel Centre in the Docklands, described by Mayor Ken Livingstone as,"..a disgrace and ought to be denounced by all Londoners".

Many Londoners are denouncing it, and are organising to protest against this event, and to ultimately, shut it down. The last time this fair took place was two years ago, when police used new anti-terror laws for the first time, on peacefull protestors, and cost Londoners 4million.

This years event looks to be no different, with a 'Public Protection Route Closure' to come into force from September 11, to help 'protect' the visitors and exhibitors who include companies from Israel, Croatia, China, Jordan, India, Pakistan, and of course the UK's very own EDO MBM, who have been receiving heavy police support in there attempts to halt local protests.

You can learn more information on how to get involved, or to, like Mayor Ken Livingstone, have your voice heard, by following any of these links;

Bombs on the underground sold at excel?????

19.08.2005 12:44

What exactly are you talking about ?
The bombs on the underground were homemade and nothing to do with the bombs sold at arms fairs.

This sloppy association and poor journalism simply distracts from your key message of oppossing this trade. If we are to stop this trade we need reasoned and justified arguement not inaccurate rants.

Frank

To Frank

19.08.2005 13:28

Listen Frank, if you are such a great journalist why don't you get up your arse and write something yourself then instead of complaining and moaning?

But no, obviously it is much easier to criticise somebody elses work and write a stupid comment, than put a feature together isn't it?

Look mate, Indymedia is DIY media, if you think something should be improved it would be much helpful to make an effort and improve it rather than just criticising. Comment like yours are just a waite of space, and yup, after years of helping in the IMC-UK project, I am starting to be really sick of moaners and lurkers. Do od Die!

sick of moaners and lurkers

It all adds up...

21.08.2005 05:16

...Violence breeds violence, so of course bombs sold by Excel, to cause nothing but death and pain, are the same, and have everything to do with home made bombs. Frank, my love, read between the lines. Un was clearly trying to point out that no matter what or where theses forms of violence come from, it destroys lives, our lives and if we can stop any part of it, i.e the trade of death, then lets do it...make a postive move, don't bitch.

Of course it adds up!

26.08.2005 10:58

Of course it adds up! Yes if we're going to be pedantic those bombs on the underground were home-made - but so bloody what? They could have been bought from these large organizations and it wouldn't have made any difference except to cause perhaps more damaage.

After all, when the initial hoo-ha about Al-Qaeda started up, wasn't the big fuss about how all Bin-Laden had been armed( guess where they came from?) and trained by the US.

In any case, I suppose Frank's point can be turned on its head. If it is accepted that for a bunch of kids to make some small bombs ( yes very small compared to the likes that get dropped on people's heads by armies) and then detonate them on the tube is wrong..well how can anyone justify 'making' and selling these bigger bombs? Okay so they don't go and detonate them as well ---but its pretty clear to anyone with a brain and unblinkered conscience that there is clear responsibility.

This points to the usual government hypocrisy - they 'blame' drug dealers - ( after all we ought to be able to exonerate drug dealers using the same logic surely??) but they didn't make anyone take the drugs, did they? they just sold them...

DSEi Noborder meeting: Refugees, Migrants and the Arms Trade

09.09.2005 19:15

London No One is Illegal and no borders have a meeting and discussion on Monday from 7pm during the dsei conference - see full details here:

 http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2005/09/322898.html

Helen Bamber, founder of the Medical Foundation for the Victims of Torture, has recently set up another foundation dedicated to the support of refugees suffering the physical and mental tortures of war.
Hugo Charlton, a barrister, will speak on behalf of the Campaign against the Criminalising Communities about the impact of Britains 'War on Terror' on refugee communities.
A speaker from the Campaign against the Deportation of Children will talk about the specific impact of deportations for children as a particularly vulnerable group. We will raise the question what it means to campaign for the children, but not the parents.

There will then be a discussion on ways in which we can actively support refugee and migrant communities in London.

This is the first of a series of noborder meetings in London, where we'll try to combine contributions of invited speakers with inspirations for further noborder activity.

On October 1st, no one is illegal has called for Days of Action, Days of Outrage, Days of Rights for Sans Papiers!. Noborder groups in Manchester and Sheffield are planning events - there's scope to do something in London as well.
