An Open Letter to English Partnerships and Others

from

The Shalom Family Campaign for Social Justice

upon

The Appointment of Mr. John Callcutt

English Partnerships’ New Chief Executive

The following ‘open’ letter of appeal is kindly addressed to English Partnerships, English Partnerships’ Link-Organisations, and/or, other individuals* as listed, some as registered with the United Kingdom, Companies House, March 2006.

Dear Mrs. Ford, (Chair of English Partnerships), Ladies and Gentlemen,

With reference to the above we kindly draw to your attention the following public internet website at  http://www.mvpicton.co.uk.
.
We bring this matter to your attention as we understand that, most recently, English Partnerships has appointed a Mr. John Callcutt, as its new Chief Executive Officer, a former employee of Crest Nicholson Plc.

English Partnerships will be aware that Mr. John Callcutt has led Crest for many years, both as Chief Executive Officer and more lately as Deputy Chair. He has provided his particular leadership qualities directly to the Crest Nicholson Group. We invite you to witness that during his direct leadership, our present nightmare experience, has unfolded.

We also kindly invite you to witness, what has become of our Family Home of 14 years, our beautiful ‘way of life’ and our entire Family personal private possessions, including our children's' 7 pet goldfish, in what we consider to be, a most distasteful act of corporate indifference and vandalism.

There is no doubt in our minds that Mr. John Callcutt is widely acclaimed and respected as an expert in the field of ‘sustainable development’. English Partnerships will also undoubtedly hold a realistic view of the specific qualities that Mr. Callcutt will bring to his post, as English Partnerships' new Chief Executive Officer. With this point in mind, we kindly refer to the official English Partnerships’ website and some comments made upon Mr. Callcutt’s recent appointment, contained therein. An archive copy is available here.

 http://www.mvpicton.co.uk/cache/English%20Partnerships%20-%20English%20Partnerships'%20announces%20new%20Chief%20Executive.htm

In referring to Mr. Callcutt we kindly refer to the following comments:-

“John is a very big player in our field and brings to us his wealth of knowledge and experience working in the regeneration sector. After four years sustained growth in productivity, we needed a highly credible individual to take us on to our next phase of delivery, and we have found that person in John Callcutt.” (Mrs. Ford English Partnerships).

“I am delighted with this appointment. John has shown immense calibre and empathy with the concept of creating sustainable communities through his work with Crest Nicholson. He will bring his wealth of private sector experience to work in partnership with the public sector to continue to drive delivery of English Partnerships’ programme.” (Deputy Prime minister John Prescott).

Further notes on the website also state:-

“A solicitor, John is also a leading writer particularly on social issues in urban regeneration and currently chairs a working group for the Housing Forum on meeting customer needs in construction. He is also a director of the BRE Trust, a member of the Law Society and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.”

And furthermore, that:- “English Partnerships helps create communities where people can afford to live and want to live.”

It is a matter of fact, documented to the record, that our Family were invited to live, wanted to live, and could afford to live, on our own houseboat, at Penarth Marina in Cardiff Bay Wales.

We are aware that English Partnerships is not alone in their considered high opinion of Mr. John Callcutt. We believe that you will be aware of a group called ‘The Way Ahead’, “South West England’s collective response to the Government’s sustainable communities plan.”. We kindly refer to their website at  http://www.thewayahead.info/about.html which proclaims, that The Way Ahead, “sits under the South West’s key regional strategies: the Integrated Regional Strategy Regional Planning Guidance 10 and the emerging Regional Spatial Strategy (which includes the region’s Transport Strategy), the Regional Economic Strategy, the Regional Housing Strategy and the Sustainable Development Framework.”.

We acknowledge complimentary comments about Mr. Callcutt published at ‘The Way Ahead’ Website at:-

 http://www.thewayahead.info/tag_biogs/john_callcutt.html

We also note that he is listed upon The Way Ahead Advisory Group:-  http://www.thewayahead.info/tag_members.html

We kindly refer to the comments regarding Mr. John Callcutt which read:-

“ John has guided Crest Nicholson through a successful transformation from a regional housebuilder to a company leading the way in urban regeneration and sustainability. He has led the company from an organisation with a £60 million loss to an outstandingly successful operation making a £80 million profit. John Callcutt has also worked to make Crest Nicholson a company with an outstanding reputation for architecture, quality and customer care. Reflecting this success, Crest Nicholson has won a string of awards, including three CABE/ Building for Life Gold Standard awards for its developments at Ingress Park, Greenhithe, Kent, and Port Marine, Portishead, Somerset. It also achieved maximum stars in the latest National Customer Satisfaction Survey conducted by MORI, on behalf of the Housing Forum – Constructing Excellence and sponsored by the DTI and the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.

John, an acknowledged leader in the field of housing, quality and sustainability, is invited regularly to address major conferences. Engagements include speaking at the Labour Party Conference, addressing the Princes Trust, the RTPI Summer School and the Housing Forum, as well as academic lectures at Ulster and York University and the L.S.E. He recently completed an essay on Housing Futures for CABE.

His passions are sustainability and urban regeneration. John’s concern for the future of housebuilding is that the industry could go in two directions: embracing quality and sustainability and offer a better living environment or a “dash for trash” where homes of poor design are built on developments that do not respect their environment.”

The question of respect never leaves our minds, especially regarding Home, Family and Way of Life.

With our five daughters, we believe that we are realistic enough, to consider and respect, that the true merit of Mr. Callcutt, or that of Crest Nicholson Plc, should not be unnecessarily blighted by genuine 'mistakes' - of either. However, from the moral point of view, and in practical terms of how our Family has been so affected, we believe that any such acknowledged mistakes - should be corrected in an ethical manner, and clear for all to see.

We accept, and you may see for yourself at this link  http://www.mvpicton.co.uk/we_were_wrong_john_callcutt_crest_nicholson_plc.htm
that Mr. Callcutt acknowledged Crest Nicholson’s 'mistake', (only after his organisation had caused a night time grounding accident to our home) but clearly admits that his former organisation was “wrong”. His and Crest Nicholson’s "wrong" was more than six years too late for our settled Family life!

However, the focus of our Family Campaign for Social Justice questions the moral grounds, upon which Mr. John Callcutt and Crest Nicholson acted with such vicious means of correction, in dealing with their acknowledged mistake, and thus towards us, in eradicating our Family, Home and Way of Life. For the benefit of doubt, we kindly inform you that this whole experience was endorsed under the ‘respectful’ leadership of Mr. John Callcutt.

For the benefit of doubt, we seek only social justice from Crest Nicholson Plc. We seek a 'Fair' and 'Just' Solution to end our nightmare.

We seek help from English Partnerships and others to, proactively encourage Crest Nicholson Plc, towards achieving that goal. With social justice, we know there is every chance of enabling ourselves and our children to a better quality of life. Indeed Mr. Callcutt is set to achieve as much in his forthcoming appointment with English Partnerships.

We kindly acknowledge and respect English Partnerships’ prerogative in making such key appointments. However, in view of these dire circumstances, which we believe that you will appreciate, we would like to take this opportunity of inviting English Partnerships’, ‘Link Associates’ and Commercial Venture/Projects, to join with us and our five daughters, in our Family Campaign for Social Justice from Crest Plc.

Please be assured that our Family appeal to English Partnerships and 'Link Associations' is not made in isolation. We have made similar appeals to Crest Nicholson Plc and other corporate and non-corporate enterprises, which includes, but is not limited to:- UBS Bank, BITC, HBOS Plc, Lloyds TSB Group Plc, Lloyds TSB Bank, Legal and General Group Plc, KPMG, Barclays Bank, Allied Irish Banks, Bank of Scotland, National Bank of Egypt International, Linklaters, Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein, Heron International, Royal Bank of Scotland, HSBC Bank, Barclays Bank, The Cooperative Bank, The British Marine Federation, British Waterways, The Vale of Glamorgan Council, Quay Marinas Limited, and Crest Nicholson Investors & Associations.

We understand that Crest Nicholson Plc will hold their Annual General Meeting, at the Runnymede Hotel and Country Spa at Egham in Surrey on Friday 7th April 2006. Please support us in our Family Campaign for Social Justice. In the first instance, please write, fax, telephone, email your message of support, or concern, to the following:

We believe that English Partnerships and all associations will be keen to aspire, obtain and uphold the operating ethos of Business in The Community, who are also aware and appear sympathetic to our campaign. We feel sure that you will know this organisation, which acts under the presidency of HRH Prince Charles, promoting the values of Corporate Social Responsibility and Responsible Business Practice. We believe that some English Partnerships' link partners and projects-associates, are already members.

In view of the above we sincerely hope that you will not be too inconvenienced with our appeal and we hope that you will join with us in our Family Campaign for Social Justice.

Should you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact us immediately.

Kind regards,

Marie Louise and Vince Shalom

With our daughters,

Hannah, Naomi, Rachel, Rebekah and Jessica.
