On the 15th April 200 people (police's estimated number) marched and danced to the sounds of samba, in the streets of Manchester in solidarity with asylum seekers and to raise their voices against detention centres.

200 demonstrate in support of your cause in a city the size of Manchester. This should tell you something about how many people are either against your cause or completely indifferent to it.

Don't be a despondent correspondent, at the same time there were no people demonstrating in favour of the asylum system we have right now! So that's 200 - 0! Light prevails, and I'm sure that this registration of opinion will be taken into account by our popular democratic system any time now. Or maybe even if two million people turned out, they'd be ignored. Either way, it'll get people talking and hanging out a bit eh, and it's always good to talk I say, you never know what might happen next. Pip pip!

well, yeah when millions marched it didn't make a difference -the war happened. But good to see people marching for causes - it is a statement: "not everyone agrees to what is happening. not everyone is indifferent to what is going on in this country" . Well done people for not getting in that apathetic mode.

I think this is ridiculous. UK immigration is a mess, as we've seen recently when a large number of immigrant criminals were not deported and the government admitted there are huge numbers of illegal immigrants it doesn't even know about. Radio 4 recently did a documentary about how easy it is for convicted criminals to enter the UK, leaving their criminal record behind and we never know anything about it - and that includes murderers and sex offenders.

Sometimes, immigrants need to be detained, questioned, and even deported. The world is not a cosy place where everyone is nice and friendly, love is everywhere, the sun is always shining, and everyone is welcome. On the contrary, to continue with the same metaphor, there's a lot of cloud and rain associated with immigration. There are real problems, for example, in the 'asylum' areas like Moss Side which is basically like a ghetto, supported by welfare benefits. That's not desirable or healthy for any country, and the UK needs respecting as much as anywhere else.
