Scooter Libby Outed Unit That Spied on Iran at Nuke Conference

Paul Jennings | 09.02.2007 00:33 | Anti-militarism | Iraq | Terror War

Scooter Libby is on trial for perjuring himself in regard to his outing of CIA operative Valerie Plame and thus her front company Brewster Jennings. Jean C. Edwards is a former CIA agent who recently listed Valerie Plame's famous CIA front company Brewster Jennings Associates as her own former employer. Edwards attended at least three conferences with nuclear engineers and scientists from Iran, Pakistan, and other prospective and actual nuclear nations, apparently to spy on them. The conferences were held in Trieste, Italy, in 1991, 1992, and 1995 while Edwards worked for the CIA. In the lists of attendees below, Edwards is listed as Jean C. Edwards from Jamaica.

Edwards has worked as an engineer but now works as a lawyer. Her resumes -- before they were cleaned up -- are at  http://cryptome.org/cia-edwards.htm .

The resume of Jean C. Edwards on a Washington, D.C., law firm's site was sanitized to remove the Brewster Jennings reference after the Chicago Tribune contacted Edwards.  http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-060311plame-story,1,2504459.story??track=sto-relcon Before, the resume showed that Edwards worked for the CIA front company from 1985 to 1989 as an engineering consultant. News reports have always claimed that Brewster Jennings began operations several years later, in the 1990s. Edwards' resume shows that she had left Brewster Jennings and was working for the CIA when she attended the conferences.

A copy of the "uncorrrected" resume is below. The original also can be found at  http://www.jar2.com/cryptome.ru/1/H/robert-ellmann.htm (do an Edit-Find for Edwards) with more details.

ICTP CONFERENCES

The conferences were at the Abdus Salam International center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), in Trieste, Italy. Abdus Salam was a Nobel Prize-winning physicist from Pakistan. He was at one time the director of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC). The PAEC was the focus of Pakistan's nuclear bomb research and design after a government decision in 1972 to build the bomb. Salam didn't participate in building the bomb. That effort was led by Dr. A.Q. Khan, the "father" of Pakistan's nuclear bomb.

There is another European connection. It was while working in the Netherlands that Khan acquired the information he needed to build a centrifuge enrichment plant for uranium. Khan allegedly has been responsible for distributing nuclear weapons technology to North Korea and to Muslim nations including Iran, supposedly on his own for his own financial enrichment rather than as a government effort. The Pakisistan government has him under house arrrest but unavailable for questioning.

Supposedly, Khan has admitted to providing Iran, Libya, and North Korea with technical assistance and high-speed centrifuges for nuclear enrichment. Also, reportedly Khan and his associates visited Syria, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Chad, Mali, Nigeria, Niger (site of the famous fact-finding mission by Plame's husband, Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson, which resulted in Lewis Libby's "outing" of Plame), and Sudan. Some of these countries sent representatives to the conferences Edwards attended in Trieste.

According to news reports, Brewster Jennings and Valerie Plame investigated the A.Q. Khan network of nukes for sale.

ABOUT THE CENTER WHERE THE CONFERENCES OCCURRED

Founded in 1964, the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) operates under the aegis of two United Nations Agencies, UNESCO and IAEA, and is "regularised" by a seat agreement with the government of Italy. Its goals are to:

* Foster the growth of advanced studies and research in physics and mathematics, especially among researchers from developing countries;
* Provide an international forum for the exchange of information and ideas among scientists from the North and South;
* Maintain excellent research facilities for visitors, associates and fellows, principally from developing countries, who participate in the center's research and training activities. Edwards, from the US, listed her developing country of origin as Jamaica, while she was employed by the American CIA.

Throughout its history, ICTP has welcomed some of the world's foremost physicists to its campus. J. Robert Oppenheimer, scientific director of the Manhattan (first U.S. atomic bomb) Project in the United States during World War II, was an influential voice in the creation of the center and the first chairperson of ICTP's Scientific Council. Nobel Laureates Werner Heisenberg, who formulated the uncertainty principle, and Paul A.M. Dirac, who predicted the existence of antimatter, were frequent visitors to the center. In all, some eighty Nobel Laureates have lectured at the center as well as many other prestigious scientists in fields ranging from elementary particles to solid-state physics to atmospheric sciences to mathematics to astrophysics.

SMR Number 842 (1995): CONFERENCE ON ULTRAFAST TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS IN OPTICAL FIBRES

SMR Number 612 (1992): THIRD TRAINING COLLEGE ON PHYSICS AND TECHNOLOGY OF LASERS AND OPTICAL FIBRES

SMR Number 540 (1991): SECOND TRAINING COLLEGE ON PHYSICS AND TECHNOLOGY IN LASERS AND OPTICAL FIBRES

Jean Edwards attended at least the three conferences above. The attendee lists are below. The conferences Edwards went to concerned the physics of fiberoptic communication systems rather than atomic energy or high-energy physics. That is because Edwards, a patent attorney now, specializes in fiberoptics. However, the list below includes persons from the nuclear research communities of most developing nations that have one. After hours, of course, Edwards could network with experts on atomic energy who are working or attending seminars at the center, including some of the world's leading physicists and many technologists from the third world.
