Anarchist Bookfair after party at rampART

noborders/rampart | 14.10.2007 23:29 | No Border Camp 2007 | Culture | Free Spaces | Indymedia | Migration | Other Press | London

Offering something of a break in tradition, the noborders/rampART benefit party after the anarchist book fair is an alternative to hanging out in the pub. Open from 6pm it's a chance to hang out with friends while supporting grassroots campaigns and a rare opportunity to listen to conscious hip-hop and rap with acts from the USA, Greece, Scarborough, Manchester, Bristol and London.

I understand there's already a couple of other after parties as well ( as there has been before ) - so you're spoilt for choice :)

Indymedia independent? then don't just promote the posh party!

22.10.2007 20:59

Could we have some details about some of the other parties. Rampart tends to cater to the middle class hippy end of things and plus their politics are incredibly dubious and there is some pretty nasty stuff going on there at the moment with people kicking each other out, cutting each others electricity off and threatening each other with machetes(i know i'm their neighbours). Can indymedia please put up some info about other parties. Indymedia should be independent and not just a mouth piece for middle class hippies.

The person posting the above comment and claiming to be a neighbor is clearly trying to discredit the ramparts by attributing it with the actions of it's neighbors. The machete incident involved eight people in number 11 kicking out six other members of their household. There has been infighting going on in the squatted houses and they have nothing to do with the collective that looks after the ramparts. The conflict between the people sharing those houses is exacerbated by the overcrowding, mental health issues but seems to boil down to power struggles and arguments over thefts.

The ramparts collective has been approached by various factions within these struggles and asked to assist with one forced eviction or another but has never taken sides as everyone involved tells a different story and ramparts itself has experienced thefts and damage at the hands of some of those living in the neighboring squats. For example, the ramparts water supply maliciously cut by one of the neighbors, causing massive damage to the office of the accountant in the only unsquatted building in the block. More recently, some of the neighbors stole building material and all the benches (which ramparts had loaned first to the climate camp and then the no borders camp).

The problems in the houses obviously have the potential to have a negative impact on the ramparts as a project, but to try to suggest that ramparts is responsible for the actions of its neighbors is madness. The poster clearer has a grudge against the ramparts or somebody involved in the ramparts and is deliberately concocting a libelous mish-mash of fact and fiction to colour other peoples opinions.

None of this has anything to do with 'posh middle class hippies'. To describe the ramparts, people who use it and the events that take place there as 'posh' beggars belief. Middleclass? whatever... it's a naff and meaningless insult in this context. If ramparts caters mainly for the middleclasses then it's because what we call activisms in this country is being practiced mostly by young well educated white people who others are quick to label middleclass.

Sure there have been some arty events taking place but the majority of gigs are campaign benefits, more often than not punk, while the open mic night attracts mostly homeless people from skylight. What makes them 'posh'?

Perhaps the reason indymedia admins have chosen to place the hip-hop night in the coming events section is that it is a benefit for noborders (is that a middle class campaign?). I imagine that if there are other benefit events taking place that night then they will be given the same treatment but, as yet, the ramparts event appears to be the only after party being run solely as a benefit event.

Just what are these 'incredibly dubious' politics you refer to? I'm curious as I make use of the space quite a bit and can't imagine what you are referring to. There are lots of groups that use the space so are you talking about the politics of a specific group or the politics of the collective? What do you mean by dubious? I'm sure there are plenty of people who'd consider anarchy inspired grassroots direct action politics ' dubious' but I'm guessing you mean something else.

Seems this 'Jeff' character has gone a little quiet having made serious and unsubstantiated accusations.

Addressing the bullshit

24.10.2007 11:51

Jeff is a seriously dubious poster guilty of many glaring mistakes the first of which is apparently a total misunderstanding of what Indymedia is. If he wants details about other parties to be posted then he should realise it is up to the people involved in those parties to ensure the details are posted as there isn't some kind of indymedia reporter pool that's going to do it for them.

He also complains that the noborders/ramparts benefit (which he labels the posh party), has been promoted by indymedia, apparently aggrieved that other parties have not. It is worth pointing out that the article about the benefit has not been promoted in the newswire as it is an event announcement, but has merely been linked to from the coming events section which seems quite appropriate and unremarkable for a coming event.

Breaking publishing guidelines, Jeff then goes off into an inaccurate rant. Such disinfo posts would normally be hidden, as would complaints about moderation. It is sad that indymedia comments are so frequently used in such abusive and unhelpful ways and with such bile being spewed within our circles it is unsurprising that we aren't as unified as we could and should be.
