All welcome. Free – donations for speakers expenses are requested.

After 17 days of street battles last December after a fascist cop shot dead a teenager, the situation in Greece remains very tense. Some say it is similar to Italy in the 1970’s, with strong social and worker movements facing a tooled up state working in collusion with fascist paramilitarist groups, whilst in the shadows operate alleged armed groups with sometimes questionable loyalties. In the midst of a growing economic crisis, and against a historical Greek background of police brutality and military coup, Europe’s ruling class watches Greece nervously, whilst radicals everywhere can learn much from the movements involved in the struggle as we face our own struggles.

Sorry! Greek Info Tour meeting Cancelled

26.03.2009 23:15

Sincere apologies to anyone coming, but the Friday 27 March Greek Info Tour meet has been cancelled at very short notice. This is down to the ill health of 1 of the speakers, along with certain logistical problems for the other one.

We and Bristol ABC, who were jointly hosting the event, will try to rearrange at a future date.
However the Saturday night benefit gig does go on. Come along.

the first symptoms of a sick social and economical system

The "small" revolutionary movement in Greece, started after a policeman murderd a 15year old boy,in the neibourhood called Exarchia,in the center of Athens. The riots began a few hours after the murder. So,this movement wasn't organized (..the first days..),angry citizens from the neibourhood and from other parts of Athens, went out on the streets and raised their voice against police brutality. The following day teenagers, students and teachers, young and old citizens started to demonstrate in Athens and other major cities, and attacked against police stations burning police cars.In the following days the movement changed "character".It was not only a protest agaist police violence anymore but a protest against the goverment and the whole economical and social system.Massive demonstrations, fights between protesters and police forces, riots in all major cities including the islands. For a whole month,Greece was burning.Teenagers and students started it and the workers followed with strikes and massive demonstrations. The goverment and the police lost control of the situation. There was this feeling that the strong and organized state, collapsed like a sand-castle.We have seen protests and riots in the past but this time something was "different",it was something new!It was like a new kind of "revolution" with new characteristics. Now three months later experts are still trying to analyze, what really happened during these days of December. One is for sure, the goverment is afraid that this was a small sign of the "movements of the future".Not only the Greek but all the EU members goverments. That is also the reason why experts from the Scotland Yard, came to Greece to have a closer look of what is going on here,in this small country.New laws against demonstrations and protesters, personal and political rights. The state is trying to convince the middle-class to sacryfice freedom for "social safety" in the name of anti-terrorism.Really??Who is the terrorist, when a policeman murders an unarmed 15old boy??December in Greece showed the first symptoms of a sick social and economical system, called capitalism, that is ready to collapse. What will be the next system, when this one collapses??It is in our hands to decide and choose how we want to live!!One of the best things that was born from the ashes of December is our natural right to self-organize our future!!Already,in many neibourhoods simple everyday-people are creating small groups,self-organized,to build a better future!!
This was only the start! We have just began...
