veganism has nothing to do with anarchism

veganism: complete abstinence from animal products.
anarchism: the movement of the working class to abolish the state and capitalism.

while I have no doubt vegans can be anarchists and vice versa, trying to stitch them together into one ideology is misguided at best, and more often than not an attempt by anarcho-Puritans to force their dietary choices onto others, in my experience.

also, the image from that book looks like the Masons' logo. Alex Jones would have a field day ;-)

veganarchism has everything to do with anarchism

"veganism: complete abstinence from animal products.
anarchism: the movement of the working class to abolish the state and capitalism."

That's where you're wrong on both accounts.

1. Veganism is not a diet, its an ideology - to avoid animal exploitation and cruelty as far as practically possible. The diet is merely formed from its ideology. For example, freegans who dumpster dive (and consume) meat/diary could be vegan, given that they don't buy or aid the exploitation and or cruelty of animals, human or non-human. Furthermore, this goes beyond avoiding non-human suffering, but includes avoiding the suffering of humans (an idea that is widely interpretable, and which many vegans would agree requires anarchy to succeed).

2. Anarchism, in your eyes, may be 'the working class abolishing capitalism and the state', but this is a completely anthropocentric view. Anarchism is about opposing the state and authority - therefore abolishing capitalism, and all hierachies (including those over non-humans). You might not think its authoritarian to consume non-human meat that's been paid for, but as you would (I imagine) think its authoritarian to pay for and consume humans that have been exploited, this only highlights an antispeciesist anarchist perspective, which many anarchists oppose because they believe it is not the true meaning of anarchy.

Aren't all oppressions connected? Of course, with no expections. This includes speciesism.
It's understandable to be confused by the final liberation movement, one calling for total liberation, total revolution and total abolition - but at least give it a chance and look into it.

PS - To say the veganarchy logo resembles the Masons' logo is nothing more than a hilarious joke (and I think you know it)!

I can do a lot for my cat to make his life happy and free of suffering but the cat can't do shit for me.

- um you could say the same about your serverly autistic son/daughter but it wouldn't stop you careing for them...the question isn't wether the animal in question (human or non human) can reason but rather can they suffer-please look into it! I'm to tired and not eloquent enuff to preach but do some research and you'l find that you don't have to hurt animals,in fact its quite nice not to!

veganism and anarchism are both about removing hierarchies of power

24.04.2009 10:35

Veganism and anarchism are both about abolishing hierarchies of power and dominance.

It's true you could be either one without the other, but veganarchism is just about pointing the similarities between the two and hoping people will make the connection.
