Persons entering detention: Key findings for Q3 2009 (based on management information):

* A total of 7,110 people entered detention, held solely under Immigration Act powers in Q3 2009. Of these 4,120 (58 per cent of the total) were asylum detainees.

* Of the 7,110 people entering detention in Q3 2009, 3,965 (56 per cent of the total) entered UK Border Agency Removal Centres and 3,145 (44 per cent of the total) entered UK Border Agency Short Term Holding Facilities.

* 315 children entered detention in Q3 2009. Of these 200 (63 per cent of the total) were asylum detainees.

Persons detained solely under Immigration Act powers
Key findings as at the end of September 2009:

* A total of 2,885 persons [92% of capacity] were detained in the UK Border Agency estate, 19 per cent higher than as at the end of September 2008 (2,415).

* 2,765 were held at UK Border Agency Removal Centres and 120 at UK Border Agency Short Term Holding Facilities.

* 2,070 persons who had sought asylum at some stage were being detained solely under Immigration Act powers (72 per cent of all detainees), 22 per cent higher than as at the end of September 2008 (1,690). 89 per cent of asylum detainees were male.

* 45 people detained solely under Immigration Act powers were recorded as being less than 18 years of age. 35 of these had been in detention for less than 29 days, and 10 for between 29 days and two months.

* Management information shows that of the 2,885 people detained, 1,015 had been in detention for less than 29 days, 540 for between 29 days and two months, 560 for between two and four months, 250 for between four and six months, 295 for between six months and a year, and 225 for over a year.

* Management information shows that there were 26 families with children held in the UK Border Agency estate under Immigration Act Powers as at the end of September 2009.

Enforcement and compliance [Deportations/Removals] * Key findings for Q3 2009:
* In Q3 2009, 17,055 persons were removed or departed voluntarily from the UK, 6 per cent fewer than in Q3 2008 (18,080).

2,725 principal asylum applicants were removed or departed voluntarily from the UK, 16 per cent fewer than in Q3 2008 (3,260).

* Including dependants, 2,870 asylum seekers were removed or departed voluntarily from the UK in Q3 2009, 18 per cent fewer than in Q3 2008 (3,500).

* 795 asylum seekers left under Assisted Voluntary Return schemes in Q3 2009 (760 principal applicants and 30 dependants), 5 per cent higher than Q3 2008.

* 350 asylum seekers left via other types of voluntary departures in Q3 200913, 51 per cent fewer than in Q3 2008 (710).

* Of those leaving in Q3 2009, 7,695 persons were refused entry at port (7 per cent fewer than in Q3 2008), 4,995 were enforced removals and notified voluntary departures (14 per cent fewer than in Q3 2008), 1,290 persons left under Assisted Voluntary Return Programmes (8 per cent higher than in Q3 2008), and 3,080 were other voluntary departures (7 per cent higher than in Q3 2008).

* Based on management information, 1,330 foreign national prisoners were removed in Q3 2009 compared with 1,330 in Q1 2009 and 1,230 in Q2 2009. The UK Border Agency's target for 2009 is to remove 5,800 foreign national prisoners and the target for 2009-10 is to remove 6,000 foreign national prisoners.

Asylum claims* Key findings for Q3 2009:

* The number of applications, excluding dependants, for asylum was 24 per cent lower in Q3 2009 (5,055) compared with Q3 2008 (6,685).

* Including dependants, the number of applications to the UK decreased by 23 per cent in Q3 2009 (6,280) compared with Q3 2008 (8,180).

* Including dependants, the estimated number of applications to the EU27 decreased by 3 per cent in Q3 2009 (63,000)6 compared with Q3 2008 (64,600).
