Anonymous Press Release January 28th 2011

Anonymous address governments of the world re : Egypt Uprising.

Governments of the world:

Those holding political power in Egypt have chosen to answer the people's calls for
democracy with lethal violence. International organisations must take it upon themselves
to heed these calls at this turning point in history. Democratic governments cannot idly
stand by. We call upon you to take action and show the world that you are on the side
of the people and their fight for freedom and democracy.

Your support of the popular uprisings in Arabic countries has been ambiguous, if not
absent altogether. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton exemplified the indecisiveness of
the international community as she claimed that the US “could not take sides”. Neutrality
amounts to complicity as totalitarian regimes are showing their contempt for the citizens'
right to protest. Mubarak’s regime attempted to disconnect the Egyptian people from the
rest of the world by cutting off internet communication, while his foot soldiers shot civilians
and assaulted domestic and international journalists.

It is up to you to work for the people and support the universal right to freedom of speech.
It is your prerogative to oppose violent regimes, regardless of your political affiliation. The
geopolitical concerns for ‘stability’ have for far too long served as an excuse to ignore the
violations of human rights.

People throughout the Arab world have been victimized and held hostage by
their regimes. Now the people are standing up. The current situation within Egypt presents
the leadership of the world with a unique opportunity to acknowledge and respect the
people’s ambition to control its own future. This is also the time when the question will
finally be answered, once and for all: are Western governments truly "of, by, and for the
people" or are they merely puppet facades, designed to ensure the continued domination
by those in power?

Anonymous has made its choice. We will take sides. We will support people who strive
for freedom of speech, assembly and communication - the civil rights essential for the
people to forge their own futures.

We do not forgive.
We do not forget.
Expect us.

more than just democracy

i think that what anonymous is doing is great, but we must remember that both in Tunisia and egypt, the concerns are not just about a lack of democracy but about the rise of fod prices and lack of jobs etc. a
democratic' government isn't necessarily going to bring this, so even if the current revolt in Egypt overthrows Mubarak the struggle must continue

Violent Regimes?

28.01.2011 17:46

"(Reuters) - Police might have to adopt more "extreme" tactics to deal with the new breed of protesters who took part in riots in London last month, one of the country's most senior officers has said.
"Students staged four protests late last year against government plans to raise university tuition fees, each being marred by violence.
"The final demonstration on December 9 led to the worst riots in the capital for years, with protesters attacking the car of Prince Charles.
"Hugh Orde, President of the Association of Chief Police Officers, said the speed with which new protest groups had organised demonstrations and their lack of willingness to cooperate had created a "whole new dimension to public order."
"In an interview with Prospect magazine published on Thursday, he said there had to be a realisation that a lack of communication from protesters would prompt a different police response.
""The public do understand far better why police tactics do have to be seen as slightly more extreme if they are fully appreciative of the fact that the only reason we're doing this is that these people will not engage with us pre-event," he said.
"More demonstrations are expected as the impact of the government's austerity measures to reduce the country's budget deficit begin to bite.
"Students, unions and other campaigners are due to join in staging two protests in London and Manchester on Saturday.
""From a policing angle ... there is something to be hopeful about the unions joining because they are an organised force," Orde said.
""My sincere hope would be that if they are organising, as they are, a very large demonstration across the country that they engage and they show leadership."
"Orde defended the "kettling" containment tactic, saying it would evolve over time, and said British police forces' handling of protests compared well to other countries, highlighting the attack on Prince Charles's limousine as an example.
""If that had been Washington, that would have been very different. I think it would have been a bloodbath," he said.
"He also played down the chances of water cannon being used in the future, saying it was "quite an extreme tactic" and would be inappropriate at the moment.
""That's not to say that there may not come a time when you do see water cannon being used somewhere on the mainland in the United Kingdom," he added."
