3 nuclear reactors melted down after quake, Japan confirms 06 Jun 2011 Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant experienced full meltdowns at three reactors in the wake of an earthquake and tsunami in March, the country's Nuclear Emergency Response Headquarters said Monday.

The nuclear group's new evaluation, released Monday, goes further than previous statements in describing the extent of the damage caused by events on March 11. Reactors 1, 2 and 3 experienced a full meltdown, it said. The plant's owner, Tokyo Electric Power Co., admitted last month that nuclear fuel rods in reactors 2 and 3 probably melted during the first week of the nuclear crisis. [Wow, the truth emerges almost three months to the date! Too bad the corporate-pwned media isn't as interested in nuclear meltdowns as it is with Anthony Weiner's crotch. --LRP]

Plutonium found in town near Fukushima nuclear plant --Japan doubles radiation leak estimate 07 Jun 2011 Japan's nuclear safety agency has more than doubled its estimate of the amount of radiation released into the atmosphere from the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant. And plutonium believed to have come from the plant has also been found in a town near the facility - the first time plutonium has been found in soil outside the facility. The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency says it believes the earthquake-stricken Fukushima plant emitted nearly 800,000 terabecquerels of radioactive material into the air in the days after it was hit by a massive tsunami. That is more than double the original estimate and is based on new information suggesting the No.1 and No.2 reactors suffered meltdowns much earlier than thought revealed.

Tepco Plant Radiation Level Estimate Doubled by Safety Agency 06 Jun 2011 Japan's nuclear safety agency doubled its estimate of radiation released by Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s Fukushima Dai-Ichi plant, which was crippled by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. The station released about 770,000 tera becquerels of radioactive material into the air between March 11 and March 16, Hidehiko Nishiyama, deputy director-general at Japan's nuclear safety agency, said at a briefing in Tokyo today.

Decontamination Tech Vetted at Japanese Nuclear Plant 06 Jun 2011 Personnel on Sunday started vetting equipment intended to remove radioactive contaminants from massive quantities of water pooling in Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, Kyodo News reported. Workers were deploying the cleaning mechanism at a site storing contaminated water moved from the plant's No. 2 and reactors No. 3 reactors. The apparatus is expected to remove at least 99.9 percent of radioactive materials from roughly 1,200 tons of fluid each day, and includes components for capturing cesium and strontium.

Doctors asked to identify potential terrorists under government plans --The final draft is believed to propose to "expand Prevent programmes to health bodies to draw on the expertise of medical professionals". 06 Jun 2011 Doctors and other health professionals will be asked to identify people who are "vulnerable to being drawn into terrorism" as part of the government's redrawn counter-terrorism programme to be detailed on Tuesday. David Cameron has pushed through the change despite opposition from Nick Clegg and Charles Farr, the head of the office of security and counter-terrorism, arguing that such engagement is like "turning to a rightwing fascist party to fight a violent white supremacist movement".

40 UK universities are now breeding grounds for terror as hardline groups peddle hate on campus [LOL!] 06 Jun 2011 England's universities have become a breeding ground for extremism and terrorist recruitment, according to a disturbing government report. Officials have identified 40 English universities where 'there may be particular risk of radicalisation or recruitment on campus'. A soon to be published Whitehall report -- seen by the Daily Mail -- will point to a string of examples of students going on to commit terrorist acts against this country or overseas.

Killer E.coli 'being spread by terrorists' --The Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure has warned it would not be beyond al-Qaida to launch a food-based attack. 06 Jun 2011 The deadly E.coli outbreak could have been spread by terrorists [Monsanto], say doctors. They fear rogue groups may have deliberately implanted the killer germ into fresh produce. Poisoning food supplies would be the perfect way for terror groups to be taken seriously, experts believe.

U.S. Plans $3 Billion Mercenary Force for Iraq --State Department Prepares to Hire 5,100-Strong Security Detail and Take Over Military Hardware for After Army Leaves --State Dept. will rely on mercenaries to carry out range of military-style missions 'not inherently governmental' 07 Jun 2011 The State Department is preparing to spend close to $3 billion to hire a security force to protect diplomats in Iraq after the U.S. pulls its last troops out of the country by year's end. In testimony Monday before the Commission on Wartime Contracting, Patrick Kennedy, undersecretary of state for management, said the department plans to hire a 5,100-strong force to protect diplomatic personnel, guard embassy buildings and operate a fleet of aircraft and armored vehicles. [It's oh-but-another reason to *Seize DC.*]

Five US soldiers killed in Iraq --Five rockets hit American Camp Victory in Baghdad --Monday's fatalities worst single toll for US troops in Iraq since May 2009 06 Jun 2011 At least five American soldiers have been killed in Iraq, the single largest loss of life for the US military in nearly two years. The US military said in a brief statement that "five US service members were killed Monday in central Iraq," giving no additional details about where the incident occurred or how they died. Iraqi sources announced earlier that five rockets hit the American Camp Victory base in the outskirts of the capital, Baghdad.

Britain's £6m a week bill for bombing Gaddafi's military machine 07 Jun 2011 Britain is spending a staggering £6million a week dropping bombs and firing missiles during the war in Libya. UK forces have used around £66million of precision-guided ordnance, including 20 submarine-launched Tomahawk missiles, to decimate Colonel Gaddafi's military machine over the 11 weeks of the conflict. The country is also spending £285,000 a week on accommodation for RAF crews, including at the Gioia del Colle airbase in southern Italy - a total of £3.1million.

Libyan 'rebels' will recognise Israel, Bernard-Henri Lévy tells Netanyahu [Of course they will.] 02 Jun 2011 Libya's rebel National Transitional Council (NTC) [US-backed oil-stealing mercenaries] is ready to recognise Israel, according to French philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy, who says he has passed the message on to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. "The future regime will maintain normal relations with other democratic countries, including Israel," Lévy said after meeting Netanyahu Thursday.

Ex-Mossad chief grilled over Iran remark 06 Jun 2011 Israeli officials have roundly criticized ex-Mossad chief Meir Dagan for calling a possible attack on Iran "a stupid idea," saying such remarks undermine Israel's ability of prowess. "Any ability to disperse the ambiguousness surrounding the issue of Iran hurts Israel's standing against Iran," Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said during an interview with Israel Radio. He added that the military option against Iran must remain on the table.

US drone strikes kill 21 in NW Pakistan 06 Jun 2011 A barrage of non-UN-sanctioned US drone strikes have killed at least 21 people and wounded several others in Pakistan's South Waziristan's tribal region near the Afghan border. In two consecutive assaults, US drones fired four missiles at a religious seminary and a house in Shalam Raghzai and Wacha Dana areas respectively, killing at least 17 people and injuring several others early Monday, local sources told a Press TV correspondent. Shortly after the second attack, two more missiles were fired at a vehicle in Shawal area of south Waziristan region in northwestern Pakistan and left four more people dead, bringing the death toll to 21.

Aussie soldier killed in S Afghanistan 07 Jun 2011 An Australian soldier has been killed during an operation in southern Afghanistan where a large cache of munitions belonging to militants was destroyed. The casualty was the 27th Australian death in the Afghan conflict and the fourth in two weeks. Australian Defense Force chief Marshal Angus Houston said early on Tuesday that the 23-year-old combat engineer was killed in Helmand province late on Monday.

NATO: Anonymous will be "infiltrated" and "persecuted" 06 Jun 2011 Reading NATO's new draft general report on cybersecurity, one gets the impression that what the alliance worries about most these days is not an "armed attack," but a cyberattack on its network servers, or the infrastructure of any of its member countries. "In this Information Age, the North Atlantic Alliance faces a dilemma of how to maintain cohesion in the environment where sharing information with Allies increases information security risks," NATO's Information and National Security survey observes, "but where withholding it undermines the relevance and capabilities of the Alliance." And WikLeaks and Anonymous get top billing as visible threats to NATO's efforts to control its information perimeters.

Hackers force closure of FBI-linked site [What a shame!] 06 Jun 2011 The FBI says it had to close down an Atlanta Web site that monitors cybercrime because it was hacked. Lulz Security, or LulzSec, a mysterious, anonymous group, last week penetrated InfraGard Atlanta, a partnership of local business, government and security experts with the FBI, bureau spokesman Stephen Emmett told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Sunday. LulzSec took over InfraGard's site and exposed the e-mail addresses, usernames and passwords of its 180 members.

One in four US hackers 'is an FBI informer' --The FBI and US secret service have used the threat of prison to create an army of informers among hackers 06 Jun 2011 The underground world of computer hackers has been so thoroughly infiltrated in the US by the FBI and secret service that it is now riddled with paranoia and mistrust, with an estimated one in four hackers secretly informing on their peers, a Guardian investigation has established. Cyber policing units have had such success in forcing online criminals to co-operate with their investigations through the threat of long prison sentences that they have managed to create an army of informants deep inside the hacking community.

Nancy Pelosi calls for Anthony Weiner ethics inquiry 06 Jun 2011 House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Rep. Steve Israel, the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, have called for an investigation into Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) over the series of sexually explicit conversations and lewd photos he exchanged with a half-dozen women during the last several years. "I am calling for an Ethics Committee investigation to determine whether any official resources were used or any other violation of House rules occurred," Pelosi said in a statement released on Monday night.

Anthony Weiner admits to sending lewd pictures to woman via Twitter --New York congressman says he is sorry for his conduct but insists he did not break any law and won't resign 07 Jun 2011 A painfully embarrassing week for the New York Democratic congressman Anthony Weiner was brought to an excruciating denouement when he admitted that he had sent sexually suggestive photographs of himself over the internet, confessed to lying to cover it up but said that he was not resigning. In a half-hour press conference during which he at several times was fighting back tears, Weiner made a total and grovelling apology. After days in which he had at first claimed the photographs were hacked out of his computer and sent without his knowledge, he said he took responsibility for his "dumb" actions. [Three words: Senator David Vitter.]

Central Park Zoo's beloved Ida, 'the ambassador for all polar bears', dies at 25 04 Jun 2011 One of the Central Park Zoo's beloved polar bears has died. Zoo officials in New York say Ida, 25, was put down on Friday after veterinarians determined she had liver disease brought on by cancer. She was born in New York's Buffalo Zoo in 1985 and went to the Central Park Zoo when she was two.
