CIA website allegedly hacked by ‘Anonymous’

Stephen C. Webster | 10.02.2012 23:37 | Technology | World

The website of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)  http://www.cia.gov/ appeared to be offline Friday afternoon, shortly after a Twitter account associated with the hacker group “Anonymous” announced that it had been taken down.  https://twitter.com/#!/AnonymousPress/status/168064051304341504

Reached for comment by Raw Story, a CIA public affairs officer had no comment, but did note that the agency was “experiencing some problems with the servers.” A press officer also had no comment, and said that the website being down was “news to me.” A third request for comment, filed with another press officer, went without any reply.

Russia Today was the first organization to report the alleged hack.  http://rt.com/usa/news/anonymous-hacked-cia-hackers-049/

If hackers were indeed responsible for the website’s downtime Friday, it wouldn’t be the first instance: hackers with the now-dormant “Lulz Security” group said last June that they were responsible for taking down the CIA’s website, which is of little significance to agency operations.  http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2011/06/15/cyber-attacks-expose-network-weaknesses/

Obviously there aren't too many technical type people reading this site.

The CIA website was not taken down by 'lulz' or anybody else for that matter. The best they can hope for is a distributed DOS attack and that is easily dealt with.

And how exactly does sticking it to the man take the form of fiddling with his website????

'lulz' + Anonymous = complete horse-shit.

This 'dramatising' things has got to stop now...you're becoming a laughing stock.

No wonder so many of you fail all the bloody time...you're language is only understood by children...and children do not change the world...they get stuck in it!

Grow the fuck up.

Analyst.

Agreed. Yes, these people have done DOS attacks, but so fucking what.

Then they ham it up like its some major hack (which it clearly isn't). Even people with only a rudiment understanding get it about why it is a load of horseshit.

If anonymous had a website (not sure if they do - probably not), then anyone could do a DOS on it no worries.

Anonymous is like a guy taking the piss out of the size of someone's cock - when in actual fact anonymous doesn't even have a cock to take the piss out of. Anonymous is a sexless, faceless, nothingness comprising of schoolboys who havnt discovered girls yet.

the lulz don't stop

11.02.2012 11:39

please note the above two comments seem out of place on a radical website like Indymedia. that's because the metropolitan cops can't help themselves posting here, especially after getting their PHONE CONFERENCE hacked last week talking to the dreaded FBI about the investigation into Anonymous.

Cops u got owned big time.

how is the cheese?

we are legion

I like indymedia, but I feel compelled to comment on things I disagree with.
If that makes me a cop in your mind then you need to stop smoking weed and get out more.

"owned..."?
How you seem to see it: A major victory akin to winning world war 2
The reality: A meaningless act which doesn't actually have any consequence whatever, apart from providing a bit of self-masturbation material to pat yourself on the back with.

If you consider this a major victory and a total "owned", then can I suggest:
a) You need to set your sights higher. They are very, very low.
b) A proper "owned" is banging up one of your monkeys in federal prison to share a cell with "Big Frank" who will "own" you.

I think the FBI is winning on that score.

Analysis on the climbdown of anonymous

11.02.2012 12:24

Anonymous have taken a real beating since their big fail on #opcartel.
The Zetas called their bluff on that one, and we got to see how cowardly anonymous really are.
 http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2011/nov/02/anonymous-zetas-hacking-climbdown

Definitely got too big for their shoes. Tried to play with the big boys who sent them packing once they realised the reality of the situation. Never bring a keyboard to a gun fight no matter how good you are at counter-strike.

Now, they generally have fallen back on the electronic equivalent of sending unwanted Pizzas and other harmless pranks with little risk.

Someone's peeved!

Well the ability of Anonymous to access FBI/Met conversations has certainly riled some people! Those addressing 'size of action' or 'impact' surely don't understand the concept of fighting them on all levels and I ask those people - please point to the social justice that your big action has brought about.

If DoS attacks are so easily dealt with, then how is it they take their target servers down ?

If it's not such a big thing, then why don't the press officers admit it's happened and explain it's 'not a big thing' ?

If it's not such a big thing and you're far too busy carrying out 'real action', then how dedicated are you to have the time to post attempted derogatory/diversionary comments here ? Shouldn't your expert time be spent where it's of some benefit ?

Not sure what my big action is. But, I know what anonymous have done, which is fight on the level of pointless-ness. Because they know if they do anything of real damage, then they will be caught as a priority and their ass will be grass.
Listening in on a teleconference call is probably on the lowest priority of crims to catch.
Hence it is safe - which is why you do it, rather than something that the big boys would do.
Basically, most of anon are small players who too scared to get their profile up.

>> If DoS attacks are so easily dealt with, then how is it they take their target servers down ?
Who said they are easily delt with? No-one. You are so full of yourself you dont listen.
They arn't - they are quite hard to deal with. I said they were childish and of no real consequence. Its an easily victory but hollow. Doesnt change anything. Its a minimum effort / minimum consequence / minimum risk approach akin to cowardacy.

>> If it's not such a big thing, then why don't the press officers admit it's happened and explain it's 'not a big thing' ?
They did! The CIA told quite a funny anecdote about it.

>> If it's not such a big thing and you're far too busy carrying out 'real action', then how dedicated are you to have the time to post attempted derogatory/diversionary comments here ? Shouldn't your expert time be spent where it's of some benefit ?

Well, im not paid and it isn't my job. I have a job already.
And i imagine they are doing other things.

Fact remains, anonymous are small players who are too scared to play with the big boys
Then they go on and on about it in their proproganda which is boring

I think Anonymous are great

12.02.2012 15:46

So they aren't single-handedly creating the revolution and our anarchist utopia, but so what? Neither are any of us here, especially the trolls and anarcho-negativists (assuming they aren't just trolls as well).

I say keep fucking up the websites of govt agencies and big business, and keep exposing their innermost emails and other secrets. It's telling that they get the most heat when causing financial damage to banks, but symbolic attacks like this one are an excellent tactic - high profile but relatively low risk.

Maybe some political dinosaurs don't like the idea of a new generation with different ideas and tactics coming through? And I say that as no spring chicken myself.

As long as it's Anarchy, I'm all for it!

anon

they must be good

13.02.2012 00:18

'anonymous' is one of the best things to happen to global activism for years!
You can tell they are having an impact because the trolls are really keen to divide us all against eachother, so we all argue back and forth about weather they are any good or not.
Of course they are!
All that troll crap about big boys and the big league etc. what a laugh, as if being a mexican gangster was anything to aspire to. These kids are doing great and good luck to them, I might be a bit old fashioned but anyone who can humiliate the cia and the met etc. must be onto something good.
That phone conversation they leaked..... awesome!
well done anon,
keep exposing their weaknesses
hehe its funny to think that pretty much all the bastards can do against anon is to send in the trolls for some classic divide and rule. What a pathetic bunch they all must be.
Cowards in suits and their dumb minions.
keep it up anon, whoever you are, you are making a lot of people very happy right across the world.
