Harry's Place, Islamophobia and the arrest of Sheikh Raed Salah

04-07-2011 11:09

Sheikh Raed Salah
The arrest late on Tuesday night in London of Sheikh Raed Salah is a very strange business. The political leader of the Islamic Movement in Israel, who has three times been elected as Mayor of his town, Umm al Fahm, has visited Britain without problems before, and his programme this time – including two engagements in the House of Commons - was public knowledge well before his arrival. No objection was made by any UK government agency.

14 Propaganda Techniques Fox "News" Uses to Brainwash Americans

03-07-2011 20:42

There is nothing more sacred to the maintenance of democracy than a free press. Access to comprehensive, accurate and quality information is essential to the manifestation of Socratic citizenship - the society characterized by a civically engaged, well-informed and socially invested populace. Thus, to the degree that access to quality information is willfully or unintentionally obstructed, democracy itself is degraded.

Italy: civil war in Valsusa – Repression against NO TAV movement

03-07-2011 20:37

Greeting from the Free Republic of the Maddalena
After a crowded torchlight march on the night between June 26th and 27th, the Free Republic of the Maddalena in Piedmont was brutally assaulted by a full-scale military operation performed by around 2000 forces that turned the place into a battle site: teargas thrown at eye level, bulldozers and heavy vehicles used to evict the camp, water jets against protesters, beatings, tents and equipment smashed up. In the nearby town of Venaria, a riot police vehicle on its way to the site ran over and killed “by mistake” an elderly woman.

EDL Latest

03-07-2011 12:55

What is happening in the EDL this week then eh?

Crivvens, Jings and Help Ma Boab! The members of the Tommy Robinson Band the English Defence League have been getting intae a right wee state this week over their various schisms and are running roond the forums like heedless haggis's desperate for guidance from an increasingly distant leadership! Wee Tam has done a bit of a disappearing act recently: he is under bail conditions and must not have anything to do with the EDL. It also says on 1 forum that he is on a stag do abroad. Whether this is true or not we cannot verify but the statements that have come from EDL HQ certainly do not sound like him - ‘repudiate' Tam? Crivvens! Whit does that mean? Kev Carroll, his ‘number 2,' has also been maintaining radio silence so is anyone at EDL HQ or is that just Hel Gower tidying up the coke spoons and Pot Noodles?

The EDL Leadership
Wee Tam Robinson originally prided himself on the EDL leaderships ‘multicultural racism' stance and oft tooted their various ‘ethnic' members to prove they aren't racist but things have no been going tae well: of the original leadership Richard Price, once a ‘political prisoner,' has now been excommunicated on conviction of child porn and crack and cocaine possession. Guarmit Singh - the token Sikh member - has resigned because his Nan is poorly. ‘Mixed race yoof leader' Joel Titus is in prison. John ‘Snowy' Shaw has gone all religious and is promoting the bogus Protocols of Zion. As this is the first ‘big book' he has read he naturally thinks it must all be true. Puir wee thing! He was hoofed out early on despite his part in the Dudley ‘rooftop protest.' He is currently siding with the North West and North East Infidel factions who split from the main EDL after the do at Blackburn where Tam ‘outed' one of his critics who got a battering. Abdul, the Glaswegian Asian laddie, has been outed this week spouting anti-Catholic vitriol which is no going tae endear him to some of the EDL members of Irish descent - like Tommy Robinson and Kev Carroll. What is clear from the demos and internet chat is that Tam is losing both his leadership buddies and control over his followers. Although he still has a fair amount of sycophants, many on the forums are unhappy with him and Kev Carroll deciding everything and although the leadership said they are no longer liaising with plod many divisions are now organising their own flash demos irrespective of what happens in Luton.

Flash!
Many members have agreed that the static demos are frustrating: being stuck in a car park on the edge of town surrounded by nervous cops with no toilets and all the boozers closed is no fun. Hence the flash demos. However, the polis will no take kindly tae that kind of behaviour and come down hard like they did in Oldham last year when the EDL tried the same tactics there. They got battered and nicked. Other more sensible EDL have realised that this kind of deliberate disorder will just create negative publicity in the national media. Not that they get much positive coverage anyway. Next week is going to prove how effective the flash strategy when various divisions hold demos in their areas: Middlesboro, Bradford, Leeds, Cambridge, Clitheroe and Halifax have all threatened them and Halifax division held a trial one yesterday though this was piss poor and covered in plod. There is the serious risk of spreading themselves too thinly as most of the demos are too close to each other to be really effective. The day could well end up as a washout.

No Moore!
The essentially paper Jewish Division had a dreadful week and lead heedbanger Roberta Moore has finally been booted out over her increasingly uncontrollable outbursts and getting intae a reet tizzy with wee Tam over multiple things. Moore's many infractions include attempting to align the EDL with various dodgy Zionists and internet fallouts with prominent members. Many of the EDL membership have reacted positively to the ousting of Moore by saying they do not want anything to do with Israel and that they joined the ENGLISH Defence League. However, given that the leadership are funded by the Zionist Alan Lake wee Tam has made it clear that the EDL WILL support Israel whether the membership like it or not. Like most far-right groups the EDL depends on quantity not quality and have not been careful who they have sided with hence the final implosion with Moore. The EDL have already been fragmented by the Infidels split and this pro/anti Israel thing is going to likewise alienate a membership from whom the leadership is estranged and who are desperately seeking guidance and clarity. Neither of which are forthcoming (especially if Tam's charlie'd up in a bar in Ibiza!). By the way, up here in auld Reekie we hear that the Scottish Defence League is still ‘yid free.' Such wee charmers!

Wee Tam & The Big Huge!
As for Wee Tam, his legal problems pile up like fish supper wrappers on a Friday night. He is currently under bail restrictions and cannot have anything to do with the EDL although he still seems to be communicating with some members. He also has outstanding cases against him but not just to do with the EDL. Tam is a wee businessman and owns several properties and businesses and is under investigation for fraud. What is happening over this is unclear but we hope things work out for him.

This week, the Muslim Debate Initiative invited the EDL to come and discuss their differences in neutral and civilised territory to which a lot of members reacted with a predictable flurry of racist abuse. The EDL will not publicly debate for 3 reasons: that many of the EDL's arguments are flawed and do not stand up to scrutiny; that the leadership have no one left who is articulate enough to debate in public; and that judging from their reactions they are unable to distinguish between moderate Muslims and the tiny percentage of Islamic extremists in the UK - as demonstrated by them singing ‘Mohammed/Allah is a pedo' and assuming ‘moderate Muslims' will not mind.

There is still debate on whether the EDL should ‘go political' but again they will suffer from the above 3 reasons, flawed arguments, inarticulacy and kneejerk racism. If they did ‘go official' they would immediately disappear amongst the multiple initials of the BNP, the fluffy fascist BFP, UKIP, England 1st and any number of independent hopefuls desperate to lose their election deposits.

In Conclusion ...
It's no looking good Tam! The original leadership has been reduced to you and Kev with many on the forums questioning your wisdom. The EDL was splintered by the North West and North East Infidels who were sick of the leadership ‘down south' bossing everyone and saying they have to like ‘Jews and Pakis' and the infidels are more openly racist than Tam's boys. Fellow travellers like Billy ‘Bunter' Baker of the English Nationalist Alliance have been ostracised and now the Jewish division have been booted oot. It is clear that the EDL has suffered from egomania as well as factionalism but there is also the fact that it has proved to be a lucrative venture: the merchandising in particular but also there are questions over the whereabouts of cash raised for the now excluded Snowy defence campaign and the Richard Price defence campaign. Other EDL members not opponents bought this up first which is how we found out about it. We will be watching how events unfold on next Saturday so see you then! Oh, and hello to Expose, keep it up!

Resist the evictions at Clifton Mansions July 12

03-07-2011 08:55

Clifton Mansions On Coldharbour Lane is a community of squatters in the heart of Brixton. Squatted since the 1990's the 22 flats are home to a large and diverse group of people. The residents have repaired and maintained the properties after Lambeth Council left them empty and neglected. Clustered around a central courtyard Clifton Mansions is a safe and vibrant community where violence and abuse are not tolerated.

On Tuesday 12 July 2011 the police plan to block off Coldharbour Lane and enforce the eviction of all the people living in Clifton Mansions. Making the astonishing claim that evicting Clifton Mansions will somehow solve the problem of drug crime in Brixton, the police failed to consult with local councillors before pushing ahead with this plan. Clifton Mansions residents have received only two weeks notice that they are to be evicted from their homes.

Following the evictions, Lambeth Council will pay Camelot, a private company, to provide “live-in guardians” to occupy Clifton Mansions. The squatters have been providing a free guardian service for years. Why make people homeless and then pay a multinational company to occupy their homes?

Eventually Lambeth wants to sell Clifton Mansions to property developers, further reducing Lambeth's social housing stock in central Brixton. Clifton Mansions will be turned into luxury flats priced well beyond the means of the local community.

Please contact the council and the police to let them know what you think.

Show your support on eviction day:

12 July – 8am – Clifton Mansions – 429 Coldharbour Lane

They're closing the street so lets have a party!

Antifascist Prisoners In Need Of Support

Six antifascists were recently fitted-up and sent to prison. Because of ongoing legal issues, for the moment we are unable to say more about their case, but a full report will eventually be issued. Suffice to say, they have been well and truly fucked over and deserve our fullest support and solidarity. Please write to them. As always, assume your letters are being read by our enemies and ensure you do not compromise your own security or that of others. Also please note that Thomas Blak and Austin Jackson are as yet unsentenced. For advice on writing to prisoners see the Leeds ABC website. La lucha continua!

report and pics from j30 events in london

02-07-2011 17:55

from the use of 150 officers to remove a small peaceful occupation camp from trafalgar square early in the morning, through the use of tsg officers to conduct targetted snatches, searches and dodgy arrests throughout the day, to the use of lines upon lines of police to clear the whitehall area later in the afternoon, the j30 protests were characterised by repressive, stupidly expensive, and unnecessary shows of force from the authorities.

from the eviction of trafalgar square onwards, it was clear the met believed their own hype, trumpeted in the evening standard the previous evening, that j30 would turn into riots, however despite continual provocation, it turned out a very relaxed and english affair, and of the 30 arrests reported, many were of children, some clearly unlawful, and most pointless.

an NUJ journo told me he'd watched a 14 year old boy being arrested for arguing with the police when his friend was pulled out of the crowd for wearing a hoodie. i spoke to another young man who had a bandana round his neck. it was stolen from him by police under the guise of section 60, even though he had at no point used it to cover his face. he was given no receipt or paperwork. because he was wearing black, a smart pair of jeans and a t-shirt, he had been stopped and searched on three occasions by mid-afternoon, and on one of those, taken down a side street and roughed up in the process.

as the march passed charing cross station on the strand, a team of tsg were pulling people from the crowd, mainly black and asian along with some white teenagers. a muslim girl was told to remove her religious face covering, and a 12 year old boy, on the protest with his mother, a teacher, was handcuffed and hauled away when a search found a small paint canister in his bag. as he was taken into the station, a crowd of concerned protestors (made up of a real cross-section of ordinary people) surrounded and shouted at the police. although this crowd was angry, their anger was vocal not physical, but it gave the excuse for some of the tsg thugs to become violent. i watched one in particular, constable webb, U3543, assault several people in succession, coming up from behind and without warning pushing people out of the way. when i tried to report the assaults to other police, i was of course met with stony silence, despite the fact that his actions were not dissimilar to those of pc simon harwood, now finally facing a manslaughter charge years after iain tomlinson died.

aside from the anti-cuts protest, a small group from avaaz.org were staging a protest outside the department of culture media and sport on the day the vulture secretary, jeremy cunt, was due to announce in favour of rupert murdoch's controversial bskyb monopoly bid.

meanwhile, down in parliament square, a squad of riot police in their silly blue baseball caps were busy conducting searches on passers-by, including a journalist with a press card, while a forward intelligence photographer took close up face shots of some of those searched, even though nothing incriminating was found.

outside the queen elizabeth conference centre, a spanish-style 'people's assembly' formed, and an open mike was made available to speakers, while uk uncut organised football and other games.

a group of black-clad anarchists marched past the centre and acted as pied pipers to some of the crowd who followed them up whitehall, where they pulled over the central line of metal barriers in a token act of defiance. dozens of police trotted along behind them, and inevitably at the trafalgar square end of the road they were met by a large police presence, and became cordoned in by the officers behind them.

there were a few scuffles at this point, and several overly-violent arrests. it really seemed as though the police were hyped-up for violent confrontation, and every attempt was made to inflame the situation, including tsg officers striking out at press photographers as they dragged their arrestees out of sight behind police lines across side streets.

i also saw a man snatched by plainclothes police who looked much like your average football hooligans. they used plastic wires to tightly restrain his wrists behind his back even though he appeared calm and offered no resistance.

in protest at all this violence, a small group of people, some of whom i recognised as part of an explicitly peaceful campaign group, staged a sit-down protest at the north end of whitehall. more people joined them, until around 30 were sitting in the road, despite a short wet rain shower. police numbers built up, tsg officers also moved in, and among the ensuing confrontations i again saw card-carrying press being pushed around and refused access, as the sitters were picked up and moved to the pavement.

then lines of police, sometimes 5 or 6 thick, began pushing people down whitehall, and then left down horseguards avenue to the embankment, leaving the upper end of whitehall clear of all except police.

as most of the protestors had left the area, i joined a small group, including several colourful clowns, who decided to stage a good-natured anti-cuts protest outside 'boots' and 'tesco' opposite westminster. their singing and banners managed to close the 'boots' store ten minutes early, and their boisterous song outside 'tesco' amused and interested many passers-by, several of whom agreed not to shop there after speaking to the protestors.
