Public squatting in the U$A on the up

08-01-2012 15:30

Although it is hard to hear what is really happening on the ground in U$A, it appears that recently there has been an increase in squatting in cities across the United States. Obviously, squatting is often a covert activity, but it seems that a few factors have dovetailed to facilitate the emergence of a new, public squatting movement. This short article will provide a background to these events and a report of the actions which we have heard about. Hopefully these are merely the tip of the iceberg....

Hit them hard!
http://nazi-leaks.net/ published a very recent BNP membership list which has been retrieved in a large-scale hacker attack on fascist webpages at the end of 2011. They could be of interest for U.K. antifa activists. Never again!

UK Indymedia and Twitter

08-01-2012 00:16

UK Indymedia

Since Indymedia started over a decade ago, the web has undergone major changes, with many more people and campaigns using their own blogs and sites. Corporate sites such as facebook and twitter have also become players in the exchange of information. Recent convictions of Facebook users have shown that using corporate sites can mean an increased risk for users, and whilst twitter has been more assertive about challenging police requests for user information, it remains another database which the state can potentially mine for information, for example the recent court request to Twitter for Occupy users IP addresses in the US. At Indymedia UK we still strive to find ways of getting out information about actions and campaigns to as wide an audience as possible, whilst bearing in mind the need to maintain anonymity and to reduce the risks to our users. We are currently reviewing our twitter strategy with a view to expanding the user base and getting information out to as wide an audience as posssible.

No Justice for Kingsnorth Fitwatchers

07-01-2012 18:59

Fitwatch regularly get asked what happened to the cops who assaulted members of the group during Kingsnorth climate camp. The case received a large amount of publicity when it was front page of the Guardian in June 2009, and many thousands of people viewed the footage of officers using excessive force against three fitwatchers who were trying to identify officers who weren’t displaying their numbers.

However, until recently, there hasn’t been much to report. The IPCC and West Yorkshire Police (WYP) waddled their way through their initial investigation and subsequent appeals, and despite overwhelming evidence, found most of the behaviour and arrests acceptable behaviour aside from a couple of minor caveats such as the cops not identifying themselves being “regrettable” rather than intentional. PC Fisher, the cop who made headline news through using a stranglehold and excessively pressure pointing one Fitwatcher, was the only officer who complaints were upheld against. However, even the findings against him exonerate him of deliberately intending harm or injury through his use of force.

How Police branded @OccupyLSX and @UKuncut as “Terrorists”

07-01-2012 18:07

Is this City of London Police ‘Terrorism/Extremism update for the Business Community’ genuine or some sort of unsubtle hoax? After viewing the picture – courtesy of @HeardinLondon – I realised why this pressing question was being asked.

Armed Police Operations in Nottingham arrest man

07-01-2012 02:55

Friday 6th January 2012

Passing the Victoria Shopping Centre at about 3.20pm this afternoon, 2 police cars suddenly arrived next to me on the pavement area at some speed. They contained armed officers.

People asking each other what was goin on. A spoke to a man who said he had just come from the back of the Victoria Centre and there were 4 more police cars there.  I was about to go and have a look there, when the police helicopter arrived and seem to spend more time surveying the side where I was.  Dog units were also arriving.  Then, suddenly, a number of officers armed with the regulation Heckler and Koch's ran past me at speed. Outside the Hilton Hotel in Milson Street they catch up with a man and bark a series of instructions at him. A number of officers had guns leveled at him, one aiming a taser.  I could clearly see a red dot from the weapons, 'painted' on his chest.  Police then handcuffed him and searched his clothes.  Reveiwing the pictures later, all I could see that the police discovered was a walking stick and a folded pen knife.

I guess the police had been informed of arms being involved, but I gather the individual was suspected of robbery in John Lewis's store. After a while, he was lead away in handcuffs.

Police say that the man was arrested for attempted robbery, but later stated that no firearms were used and no one was injured.

It is a fact that police are routinely unarmed in Britain.  But it is my experience that I am seeing [and hearing about] an increased frequency of armed operations in Nottingham. Just an hour earlier, in one of the main shopping streets there, I noticed a red post office security van passing.  Immediatly behind, a 4xwheel specialist police vehicle, again with H&K guns cleary visible as they passed. Over the Christmas period, I had seen other security vans being similarly protected, I guess because of the increased takings from stores. The media seems to tell me this is true nationally. I wonder at what point the temporary deployment of armed officers on the streets become a routine deployment?  Will this happen by an imperceptable stealth, gradually until we reach a 'tipping point' or, will it be decided through a democratic process of some sort?  ...... just asking.
