Kilburn protest against Total in Burma

Six protesters demonstrated at Kilburn Total station, 409 Kilburn High Rd on Wednesday 23rd April. They called on the French oil company to stop funding the military dictatorship in Burma with 500 million dollars a year, fuelling the brutal regime's oppression in Burma. The foreign currency provided by Total enables the regime to buy weapons used to persecute the Burmese people and ethnic minorities.

According to the BPP report on Stormfront, 'a couple of people got a good kicking, but the most serious injuries were a broken ankle and a comrade who was taken to hospital after being kicked unconcious'. Large-scale biofuels (‘agrofuels’) are causing climate change, hunger and human rights abuses. On April 15, ‘April Biofools Day’ there were protests around the UK against a new law which requires 2.5% biofuel to be mixed into all petrol and diesel. Concerned residents protested at a BP petrol station in the Bruntsfield area of Edinburgh.

Around two thousand people gathered in Victoria square today to support striking teachers and council workers. The rally was jointly called by five unions as a national teachers strike coincided with a two-day industrial action by thousands of Birmingham council workers over a new pay and grading structure imposed by the council on April 1st, which could see some workers lose up to half their pay. For the second day in a row, picket lines at council premises across the city were mounted and services disrupted, while more than half of Birmingham's schools were closed due to the NUT industrial strike.

Amsterdam International Day of Autonomous spaces + RTS

On April the 11th the Tekenschool (part of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam) was squatted by the April 2008 Coordination Group. The building was used for socials and workshops and as a base for Indymedia NL. It was also the meet-up points for the RTS action on Saturday 12th April, which was attended by over 300 people: Video.

Around the UK at dawn this morning, protesters have again blockaded UK Border Agency depots to prevent vans leaving to snatch families from their beds. This is the second UK wide day of action No Borders UK have held in support of the many actions that happen outside UK Border Agency depots around the country regularly but go unreported in the mainstream media. This action is in support of the mothers at Yarl's Wood on hunger strike and to highlight the recent restructuring of the UK borders police. You can change your name but you cannot hide!

Birmingham Council workers strike against the imposition of a new contract

Council workers in Birmingham today protested against the imposition of a new contract, and a new pay and grading structure by Birmingham City Council. UNISON has branded the new pay structure as discriminatory although it was designed to end wage inequalities, some workers will lose up to half their pay.

Around 4,000 people protested in Victoria Square Birmingham during the previous strike and given the potential size of the dispute tomorrow, with teachers and civil servants joining the strike, there could be around 10,000 people protesting against Birmingham City Council. This is set to be the biggest public service dispute in the last 20 years.

Reclaim the Uni! Manchester students storm University building

Demo flyer
Around 350 students on the 'Reclaim the Uni' demo occupied a new building in protest against cuts in contact hours and the business-led approach to higher education. Police attempted to obstruct the march before the occupation, but students broke their lines and side-skirted their blockades. A conference was held inside the building and a set of demands was issued to the University.
