Pictures of Dalkeith Park Top Site Eviction

17-01-2006 11:00

middle camp: still intact
Here some pictures of the eviction of the top site. There are four sites in total with tree houses and tunnels. The eviction is anticipated to last about two weeks and cost £1.4m. The route of the new road leads directly through the Dalkeith Country Park, a site of specific scientific intrest, and home to herds of sheep, cows, and over 100 horses grazing there on wide fields. It is also part of the Edinburgh Green Belt and inhabitants of the park include deer, bats, birds, foxes and other wild anilmals. It is also used as a recreation area for people from alkeith and Edinburgh, and has an enormous adventure playground, folleys and old houses in the Park.
A lot of people cycle, do walking and train their dogs in the park, too.
Dalkeith town is crossed by the A68 leading to Jedburgh and the Borders.

Union pushes for urgent energy reform

16-01-2006 14:32

In a move which the more cynical might think was consciously timed to follow and support Blairs nuclear inspired visit to Nottingham yesterday, one of the countries biggest unions today warned that the country faced black-outs and job losses if urgent action isn't taken to address the coming energy crisis. However, rather than demand immediate investiment in renewable energy, they say Britain must build more nuclear power station... just what Blair want too.

Belated Newbury nostalgia pics from 10 years ago.

16-01-2006 11:52

Balun(?) spent 2 weeks up this tripod until local rednecks tipped it over
Historical report with pictures from the unprecedented direct action protests against the route clearance destruction for the Newbury bypass 10 years ago. Hopefully this will seem particularly relevant when it has been recently revealed that peak traffic levels in the Berkshire town are now equal to those before the bypass was built - years before this was predicted to actually happen. This proves conclusively - as if there wasn't proof enough - that traffic invariably grows to fill any new road capacity created.

He was there to announce nuclear policy, [or perhaps the wrong policy]
