Southfields Get Total Oil Out of Burma Protest

Six protesters demonstrated at the Southfields Total Station, 262 Wimbledon Park Road on 21st May 2008. They were protesting against the French oil and gas giant's 500 million dollar a year funding for the brutal military regime in Burma. The money just goes to the evil junta not the poor people of Burma. The regime has allocated just 5 million dollars to cyclone relief, whilst it earned 2 billion dollars in gas exports in 2007.

Wrexham marks US Memorial Day with a Picnic for Peace

In solidarity with all those marking Memorial Day in the US with messages of peace, Wrexham Peace and Justice Forum and Wrexham Women for Peace held a Picnic for Peace in Wrexham's Peace Garden. Meanwhile, in Portland, Oregon, our friend Bridie from Wrexham has read out a message of unity at the Memorial Day service organised by Veterans for Peace Chapter 72 in their Peace Memorial Park. University of Nottingham Graduate and Employee Facing Imminent Deportation Without Hearing

Hicham Yezza, a popular and active member of the academic community at the University of Nottingham, was recently arrested along with another student. After six days of detention, both were released without charge [1]. Hicham was re-arrested on immigration grounds. He now faces imminent deportation to Algeria wihtout due process [2]. There is widespread concern at the proposed, imminent deportation.

On April 17th 2008, activist from seven different european countries blocked the soy factory of Cargill in Ghent (Belgium) for a whole day long. Not one single truck of soy was able to enter or leave the factory.

During the current Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) conference in Bonn, Via Campesina and other social movements and activists have been organising a series of protests under the motto "Nature for people, not for business". 22nd May saw a banner protest, with noise and leafletting during the official celebrations of Biodiversity and at an agribusiness industry lunch.

Notts Uni detainee innocent but still facing deportation

Hicham Yezza, a popular, respected and valued former PhD student and current employee of the University of Nottingham faces deportation to Algeria on Sunday 1st June. This follows his unjust arrest under the Terrorism Act 2000 on Wednesday 14th May alongside Rizwaan Sabir and their release without charge six days later.

Wave of Repression against Activists in Austria

(Austria) – Around 7:00 am on Wednesday May 21 members of the Viennese elite police force (WEGA) stormed several apartments in Vienna. Some of the residents were woken up in their beds with guns drawn on them. A total of twenty-three (23) apartments, houses and offices were searches in Vienna, Lower Austria, Styria and Tirol.

Pro Life loonies defeated both inside and outside of Parliament.

Up to 1,000 on the Pro Choice demo.
On Tuesday an attempt to highjack the embryology bill going through Parliament was soundly defeated. Britain’s small but determined Pro Life movement had attached a number of amendments to the bill which included reducing the maximum time allowed for an abortion by half and also denying lesbian couples the right to IVF treatment. In the end every amendment was defeated and the pro lifers also had to suffer the humiliation of having their demo placed next to the pro choice contingent who outnumbered them by about 10-1.

The following is a response by some IMC UK activists to a defamatory article by an anonymous author published in the new, Manchester-based magazine SHIFT (issue 3, May-Sep 2008), under the title "Go Hamas Go"? Why Indymedia UK is losing support [1]. Although this may generate for SHIFT publicity they don't deserve, we thought it our duty to clarify the facts and refute these false allegations and accusations.
