On the murder of a Russian oppositionist

Steven Laack | 02.03.2015 11:30 | World

I tried to be totally unbiased.

The death of Boris Nemtsov is like The Life of David Gale

The most disgusting thing in speculations on murders of public figures is a barefaced flow of ‘evidences’ that comes from poseurs totally incompetent in criminal cases.

For some of them it is obvious that ‘the last fighter for democracy’ became another victim of the bloody regime (in this respect there is a good American joke – Q: How do you know the CIA didn’t kill Kennedy? A: He died eventually).

For some others it is out of question that Nemtsov was an ‘absolutely hollow person’ who represented the non-system opposition and opportunely and suspiciously became a tragic symbol of an event that was considered incoherent and lacking in public attention, moreover he died in presence of female citizen of brotherly hated Ukraine.

All of that in greater degree characterizes people who share such views rather than the actual situation.

However the reality is that Alfred Koch could remain in his hysterical raving as long as he wants, but the regime must offer prayers for such good-for-nothing ‘fifth column’ like Nemtsov was (alive and only alive) and pay it in addition faster than Americans do! For it is hard to imagine any other opposition that so totally discredited with its inutility every civil protest and actual social values doing it so completely and regularly, also so stupidly wasted the sincere indignation of influential part of society during the period of 2011-2012.

On the other hand, it is hard to believe in ability of those spineless revolutionaries to organize a murder of formerly known Russian politician, even in cooperation with Ukrainian advice-givers. Just because none of them has got the guts to do that. How would it look like? Boris, you’ll be liberal Jesus Christ! So pray in public to let this cup pass from you – in the new Gethsemane Garden on Sobesednik.ru, and then we will put a crown of thorns on you, crucify you and accuse Rome – the Third Rome. Or accuse Procurator. Or pharisaic-minded Jews. Or best of all Caesar himself! Anyway, it will be good for the business… Some other people should enter the opposition and Kiev’s government to make this real.

Shoot-out? Domestic crime? One may talk commonplaces to expand the idea that Nemtsov is not like Starovoytova, or Politkovskaya who had nothing in their lives except for principles, while questionable links with business and criminal groups, not mentioning conflicts with companions-in-arms and countless ties with women, are from times immemorial are enough for personal vendetta. Before the conclusion of investigation – everything is idle talk and demonstration of legal irresponsibility.

The only responsible civic stand in that situation is to wait for the end of investigation. In case of dissent against its results or any doubts in honesty of law-enforcement agencies, it is necessary to turn to control bodies of Russian Federation, and after that, in case of necessity, to European and international organizations. Right in that strict sequence! In any other way it will be betrayal of the Rule of Law that defines the actions of civilized people, and for which one, at least by word of mouth, Boris Nemtsov was always calling for.
