eyewitness: attacks in Cochabamba

12-01-2007 15:56 | Anti-racism | Social Struggles | World

protestors burn tyres to deter reactionary mob
I witnessed the most brutal attack on peaceful protestors yesterday in El Prado, Cochabamba's main drag. The counter-marchers, the white, rich boys and girls armed with iron bars, pistols, bars with barbed wire at the ends, and knives broke through a police barricade and attacked the opposition. A 40 year old man was shot dead with 2 bullets in the chest. Over 90 people casualties and many seriously injured in hospital.

I am calling on everyone who reads this to spread the word and contact radio stations, newspapers, Amnesty International and other human rights organistions you may have a contact with to send out an Urgent Action.

Bush, Somalia and the Future

11-01-2007 14:39 | Anti-militarism | Globalisation | Social Struggles | World

Bush’s impending demise is marked by frantic and desperate attempts to portray the illegal Iraq invasion and subsequent plunder of the precious oil resource, as a war of “noble” intent! Wars based on deception, lies and plunder, with over half a million civilian casualties, would be difficult to record as anything other than what they are – theft, murder and neo-colonial expansionism at any cost. Unfortunately for Bush and his neo-cons, the Truth regarding Iraq is widely known and it is that knowledge which will enter the historical record, not the drivel that issues from the mouths of imbeciles and psychopaths!

Bungles, Ghosts and Damage Control

05-01-2007 04:57 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Social Struggles | World

The Whitehouse is in damage control over the bungled execution of Saddam Hussein. The hurried execution backfired in the worst possible way; a vanquished leader should never be allowed to continue his work from the ‘grave’. Anthropologists are familiar with appeasement rituals and ceremonies for the dead, which are common to numerous cultures. In the wake of Saddam’s bungled execution these curious rituals begin to make sense.

Dionisio had gone to the demonstration in Oaxaca on the 25th of November. After the demonstration he and his friend Juan de Dios went to get something to eat, during which time confrontations started up between demonstrators and the Federal Preventive Police (PFP). Upon leaving the restaurant, they headed toward the downtown area, which had become filled with tear gas and smoke. When they saw a woman and her children overcome by tear gas, Dionisio stopped to help, while Juan de Dios photographed the situation around them, and that was when the two men were arrested.
