Indymedia Cinema is an ongoing showcase of contemporary filmmakers who are finding new forms of cinema to inform and inspire people on the issues of globalisation, environmental destruction, social change and justice. There are Indymedia Video Groups throughout the world that share films/documentaries/shorts. Come along to one of the screenings or look through the resources and organise your own!

Screenings: London | Bristol | Nottingham

Resources: Indymedia Videos Available | How To Organise Local Film Screenings

London: rampART - free cinema nights

The rampART creative centre and social space in Rampart Street, East London put on regular cinema nights. They may be themed to a specific issue and overtly political or they may just be showing the latest blockbuster with seemingly random shorts of actions etc off the newswire. The rampART has a dedicate space for cinema which seats about two dozen, as well as a much larger space that can be used when larger audiences are likely. You are welcome to get involved organising screenings. Currently there is a screening every wednesday from 8pm.

In July 2001 leaders from the world's eight most powerful nations (G8) met in the Italian port of Genova. Encircled by a vast steel fence and declared 'off limits' - the city centre became the forum for a brutal and bloody weekend. Despite unprecedented levels of security over 300,000 protesters joined forces to highlight their frustration at increasingly dictatorial, profit-hungry systems of government spearheaded by the G8.

This film does not hide from the truth: Staggering images of violence provide gritty realism yet the beauty of resistance shines through. Despite the repression, a multitude of voices were heard in Genova: Landless Peruvian peasants stood side by side with Sicilian cheese farmers; national boundaries were overturned as an global body of people demanded a world built on social and environmental equality. That flame - it appears - is impossible to extinguish.

Working with over 160 hours of protest-based footage recorded by scores of D.I.Y video teams, an international group of film-makers from Italy, Ireland and the UK set out to unpick the events surrounding those brutal Genova days. This film presents a radical narrative of the build-up to the events, presents the protests at street level and concludes with the long-term struggle for justice in the aftermath of the demonstrations.

Rebel Colours

The film covers the gathering of anti-capitalist protesters in September 2000 against the IMF and the World Bank conference in Prague. Interviews with activists and campaigners from the southern hemisphere give damning criticism of the IMF and World Bank policies as the film charts the preparations for the day of action in Prague, the day itself and its aftermath.

At 86 minutes, with contributions from 28 video collectives who covered the events from start to finish - the film portrays the diversity of views within the 20,000 protesters. After the event footage was cut together in Amsterdam and the sequences edited into a narrative in Rome.

The film is available in italian at italy.indymedia.org
