Article seeks to assault stupidity in our activist culture

12-02-2004 03:50

do you wait for your "leaders" to "help" you, or do you arm your desires?
here is a run-down (in mode of quick notes) to this interesting article, with a link provided. "...we challenge left activist culture to live up to its anti-hierarchical claims: activists should themselves become intellectuals. Why reproduce the larger society's division between mental and physical labor?"

Iraq, Johann Hari, Will Self and Howard Dean posing as Ralph Nader.

10-02-2004 19:48

Howard Dean tells Democracy Now that he's on the "democratic wing of the Democrat party". Will Self's retake on Wilde irradiates readers with lexical flashes and dazzling prolixity. Johann Hari's account of gay-bashing in the press is too liberal. The Baghdad blast has been immediately attributed to "al Qaeda terrorists" - the excuse machine is up and running.

Foolish of IMC to Water Down its radicalness

06-02-2004 07:23

we don't have to let others' expedient interests tool us
Allegations are arising that the IMC momentum is already slowing down due to too much administrative handiwork. An anarchist discussion points out possible reasons and solutions. Points to consider: the meta of control desires, pros/cons of restrictive protection vs enriching protection

US and UK support brutal dictators

06-02-2004 06:28

For foreign policy, there should be a single, universal standard of justice that is applied to all cases. When "leaders" apply different standards depending on their own short-term political gain, few people are fooled, no one is impressed, and no actual leadership takes place.

Why is it so hard for people such as Bush and Blair to show leadership? Instead of applying a single criterion of judgement on Saddam Hussein and all other national figures, they oppose some while supporting others. That is precisely how the U.S. nurtured previous dictators such as Manuel Noriega, Ferdinand Marcos, and Saddam Hussein himself. Give us consistent morality, not double standards!

Fight to win! Students vs. Top-up Fees

05-02-2004 15:07

Think it through...do the right thing...
The UK government's position on top-up fees is a straightforward plank in the neoliberal platform that was first laid out by Reagan and Thatcher in the 1980s, gathered steam for a while, and has recently run into quite a few setbacks (in Seattle, Genoa, Porto Alegre, Cancun, and Baghdad). It is not a "normal" domestic dispute within the UK, and it doesn't make much sense to act as if it is; it's part of a worldwide trend to privatize public resources, and to destroy the legitimacy of the liberal political consensus of the 1950s/1960s/1970s.

Slaying The Beast Before The Election Is Canceled
