Gaza donor conference: conspiracy wrapped up as compassion

05-03-2009 17:54

Gaza donor conference, Sharm el-Sheikh, 2 March 2009
The donor conference Monday at Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt had nothing to do with alleviating the appalling humanitarian crisis in Gaza and rebuilding the homes, factories, infrastructure and schools destroyed by Israel—its ostensible purpose.

Environmental silver lining in economic crisis as energy demand plummets

03-03-2009 23:32

Global energy consumption dropped last year for the first time since 1983. It would be nice to think that was down to conservation efforts in attempt to mitigate against climate change but really our thanks should go to those who have bought the worlds economy to a stand still. It's interesting that the recession is currently doing more to curb green house gas emissions than any international climate change treaty has yet to manage.

Demand for energy falling as recession deepens

03-03-2009 12:24

Falling demand for energy and tighter margins has started to bite into the record gains made by energy companies over the last couple of years. The papers are today reporting that the Drax group shares are trading near a record low on the announcement of a small drop in profits between 2007 and 2008 while demand for electricity in the UK apparently fell 4.3% in the last quarter of 2008 and looks set to continue to fall as the recession deepens.

Climate Crimes Delayed

02-03-2009 14:11

The newspapers are today reporting that the government decision on the whether a new coal fired power station can be built at Kingsnorth has been put off until autumn at the earliest. This follows the (yet to be confirmed) rumors that the Stansted airport expansion is being abandoned for at least two years. With the COP15 climate summit taking place in Copenhagen at the end of the year, 2009 is shaping up to be a very interesting year for struggles against climate change.

The Fox Guarding the Chicken Coop: Dennis Ross and Iran

01-03-2009 14:20

Dennis Ross
Whatever the reason for the postponement of Ross’s appointment and change of title, one thing is clear: the sly fox is now guarding the chicken coop. As Mel Levine said about Ross: “He’d be great for Israel.”

With the help of Richard Holbrooke, Stuart Levey and all the other “president’s Middle East men,” Dennis Ross might be able to finish the unfinished business of the neoconservatives, the containment of Iraq and Iran.

¡Dibujadme un cordero!. Carta de Principito a lasVisitadoras de Vargas Llosa

26-02-2009 11:44

More pain in the aviation industry

26-02-2009 08:47

Anti aviation campaigners may find they are increasingly pushing at an open door over the coming year and more as the recession bites hard into passenger numbers and aviation industry profits. The fall against of the pound against the euro and the dollar have made increasing numbers stay at home where the pound in their pocket still feels like it is worth something. Even with fuel prices under half what they were last summer and ticket prices cut to encourage custom, there are simply far less people seeing a quick overseas break as a viable option right now.

Police spending through the roof but little protection against crime

26-02-2009 07:56

Police today were getting a proper slagging off in the media this morning after the think tank 'Reform' published a damning report on policing in this country. The report, A New Force, found the current 43 forces operate as inefficient and expensive fiefdoms run by chief constables who are only accountable to weak police authorities. Meanwhile the UK taxpayer cough up more for policing than any other leading country yet the police fail to protect them from either serious or local crime. Sadly no media report I saw makes the connection between the inefficiency of the police on tackling crime and their increasing focus on politic policing.

Sheffield University ignores student opinion regarding army recruiters!

25-02-2009 18:44

Although there have apparently been discussions where several students have voiced their opinion supporting a ban of army recruiters from University campus, the University of Sheffield Careers Service could not care less. They have circulated an almost provoking email and have once more allowed army recruiters to hold interview sessions with students, which might even take place on campus.

Mass Surveillance

25-02-2009 17:09

In July 2001 the European Parliament compiled a report on the existence of a global system for the interception of private and commercial communications (ECHELON interception system) (2001/2098(INI). The report concluded that a global system for intercepting communications exists and that what is important, is that its purpose is to intercept private and commercial communications, and not military communications.
