Military or Market-Driven Empire Building: 1950-2008

29-04-2008 21:28

From the middle of the 19th century but especially after the Second World War, two models of empire building competed on a world scale: One predominantly based on military conquests, involving direct invasions, proxy invading armies and subsidized separatist military forces; and the other predominantly based on large-scale, long-term economic penetration via a combination of investments, loans, credits and trade in which ‘market’ power and the superiority (greater productivity) in the means of production led to the construction of a virtual empire.

From Balance of Terror to Unilateral Terror

27-04-2008 18:02

“what is a unipolar world? However one might embellish this term, at the end of the day it refers to one type of situation, namely one centre of authority, one centre of force, one centre of decision-making. It is world in which there is one master, one sovereign. And at the end of the day this is pernicious not only for all those within this system, but also for the sovereign itself because it destroys itself from within.”

What the cops did in Cardiff yesterday

27-04-2008 11:07

Bored plod
Yesterday there was a seriously over-policed peaceful demo in Cardiff against the huge new PFI that will bring a 'School of the Americas' style military academy run by arms dealers and the Open University to St Athan. Here are a few pictures of the cops, whose services were provided at huge expense to the taxpaying public, with a special focus on the evidence gathering team.

Strategic Command (StratCom) in Context: Hidden Architecture of U.S. Militarism

27-04-2008 10:20

In many ways, StratCom embodies the hidden architecture of U.S. militarism. The United States military dominates the globe through its operation of 10 Unified Combatant Commands. Composed of forces from two or more armed services, the Unified Commands are headed by four-star generals and admirals who operate under the direct authority of the Secretary of Defense, accountable only to the President. Six of the Commands are responsible for designated regions of the world, and the four others for various operations. It is a mind-numbing exercise just to list them all, but in order to comprehend the breadth and depth of U.S. militarism, it is absolutely essential to be aware of their existence.

According to the UN definition of genocide, Hilary Clinton is threatening mass genocide of an entire nation of 70 million.
