Students and staff fighting cuts at University of Sussex

Whilst Vice Chancellor Michael Farthing is sitting pretty on a salary of £227,000.
Sussex University’s budget for 2009/10 seeks to reduce costs by £3m, with additional savings of up to £5m in 2010/11. These cuts will take the form of (among others), 115+ staff redundancies, the closure of the creche and the closure of the sexual health advice centre.

Vice-Chancellor of Kingston University Accused of Misappropriating Public Funds

According to a public interest disclosure filed with the Higher Education Funding Council of England, Kingston University's Vice-Chancellor allegedly used public funds reserved for education and research to pay for his personal legal action against a former staff member. The disclosure alleges that Sir George Scott, aka Sir Peter Scott, utilized his position as Vice-Chancellor to get the University to pay for his failed complaint with the World Intellectual Property Organisation against former Senior Lecturer, Dr Howard Fredrics.

A Campus Sit-in against Israeli Occupation: An Interview with Three Participants

On Friday, February 6, the University of Rochester-SDS (UR-SDS) organized an occupation of Goergen Hall at the University of Rochester for peace and solidarity with the Palestinians. The action was partially inspired by the wave of occupations across the UK in support of Palestine the past few weeks. UR-SDS made a list of demands of the administration (including divestment from weapons manufacturers, educational and humanitarian aid to Gaza, and scholarships for Palestinian students). In a related event, on Thursday, February 12, 2008 Hampshire College of Amherst, MA. became the first US school to divest from corporations profiting from the Israeli occupation of Palestine.
