The police need help, but they're frightened to ask

The article below taken from the Torygraph demonstrates the justifications the police aim to use in order to back moves to give them full access to all digital communications and insist on full data retention. This obviously has relevance to the recent indymedia server seizure and the arrest that followed.

What science issue shall we talk about?

Select committees are almost the only place in parliament where MPs actually do what you’d naively hope they do all the time: sit down, hear a lot of evidence on an important issue, and then have a good hard think about it. The Science and Technology committee in particular have produced some fascinating and readable documents over the years. The report on the abortion act offered transparent, evidence based policy advice, package up in a very good piece of accessible popular science writing. (It also ended with a memorable tantrum from some christians). The House of Lords equivalent, meanwhile, did a very good piece of work on the public understanding of science in 2000, during the aftermath of GM and BSE.
Now SciTech has merged into DIUS, and they are asking us, which means you and me, “the public”, for topics that deserve a good hard think.

Gggollum Sues Tolkien for Cyber Libel

Sir David Eady, possibly the most famous high court judge in the UK, was brought in to rule on the case of Christopher Carrie, who claims he was abused as a child by John Tolkien, a priest and scoutmaster, and son of the Lord of the Rings author. Mr Carrie was trying to sue Royd Tolkien, one of the writer’s great-grandsons and a bit-part actor in one of the massively successful Lord of the Rings films, over comments made on a website. The fact that Mr Carrie was behind the website only came out in the build-up to the court case. He had previously posted entries on the website under the name ``gggollum''.

EV-EON: Nice Bit Of Subvertising (Shame About The Solutions)

Here’s something nice from a group that brainstormed an idea at the 2008 Climate Camp; EV-EON [ http://www.ev-eon.com]. EON want to build the first of a whole raft of coal-fired power stations in the UK, so these guys decided - and I’m guessing there are a few graphic designers and web bods involved - to make a spoof, which works well.

US,Russian or Chinese military EMF kills dolphins

Many smaller fish etc just die & float to the bottom, we are probably only seeing just the surface of this "hitech" assault on nature.

Victory! MoD Goat Experiments Stopped

Today the MoD put out the following statement. We are delighted that these tests have stopped, although we maintain that it is a decision that is 100 years overdue. This also highlights a far wider issue, of repeat tests which are being conducted across the country without review, and which would be halted were they exposed to the public.
