SmashEDO besiege Brighton bomb factory
Today the Smash EDO ITT's Hammertime demonstration saw 300 protesters surrounding Brighton's bomb factory and demonstrating against EDO/ITT for six hours.The demo was named for the 2009 Decommissioning, when a group of activists broke in to the EDO/ITT factory, decommissioning it with hammers to stop the production of weapons components being used by the Israeli military in the Gaza war. The Decommissioners were victorious in court, when they were unanimously acquitted of conspiracy to commit criminal damage in June.

Last week, when the High Court ordered the release of documents relating to alleged British complicity in the torture and ill-treatment of British nationals in US custody, as part of a civil claim for damages filed by six former Guantánamo prisoners, 16 pages of those documents related to interrogations by British agents of one of the six, Omar Deghayes, who was released from Guantánamo in December 2007.

Following today's successful nonviolent flotilla of cycles that took Alverhurst the March of the Penguins, famous penguin (who, incidentally now refuses to March to any war zone) to Marchwood Military Port today (the UK's biggest fleet).On armed forces day (wrongly named 'forces') it was important to ensure that there was an nonviolent and unarmed presence and a subverting situation of the warring spectacle.
The Society of the Spectacle plays up war and makes heroes our of killers, and half felt soldiers who go - some not knowing why they go to war. Our arrival made the things change round - suddenly we were at first seen as a threat and then we subverted it by friendliness and we were even kind to the soldiers, police and MOD staff that turned up/talked to us. The level of fear was high - we made fun and play out of the situation not fear and fierceness. Methinks play achieves more than protest and seriousness ever can.
