London-Geneva walk starts Chernobyl Day, Sat 26/4 + London film screening 24/4

Parliament Square, London, Aug '07 - (c) L. Viesnik 2007 Ceremony to mark Chernobyl Day will kick off London to Geneva anti-nuclear walk

You are warmly invited to join Footprints for Peace on Saturday 26 April for the start of their three-month, 1500km International Peace Walk towards a Nuclear-Free Future, from London to Geneva, through France, in collaboration with the main French anti-nuclear coalition Sortir du Nucleaire.

Also, London screening of documentary of last year's walk from Dublin to London on Thursday 24 April (read on for details).

I don’t make a habit of swearing, but this morning has been testing, to say the least. Formerly known as the “World’s Favourite Airline” until the world decided that it wasn’t too fond of airlines pushing out carbon dioxide into its upper atmosphere, British Airways have decided, in its eternal wisdom, to kit out a couple of Airbus A318s for its most luxury conscious business travellers.

Antarctic Whale Hunt Shut Down + Embassy Demo

"All whaling activities have come to a halt," said Captain Paul Watson from onboard the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s ship Steve Irwin. No whales have been killed since January 11th.

Nuclear-Free Future Walk - London to Geneva - Apr-Jul 2008

Following on from this year's successful 900-mile Nuclear-Free Future Walk from Dublin to London, organised by Footprints for Peace, the same group will be staging another this year from London to Geneva, through France. The UK stretch will go from London to Portsmouth, starting on 26 April, the anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster.

90% Emissions Reductions by 2030? Easy!

I was in the middle of writing an article and, you know how things are, you get stuck on an idea and try a different way of looking at things. In this case I wanted to show how moving our electricity consumption to the night time could reduce the overall generating capacity needed, but I also needed to say this in the context of the startling, but real need to reduce Western greenhouse gas emissions by 90% (at least) by 2030.

Orion laser under construction at AWE Aldermaston (Nov 07) A report by the independent research group Nuclear Information Service (NIS), released the same week that Britain’s nuclear bomb factory at Aldermaston prepares for a major test of its emergency procedures, highlights a series of flaws in previous emergency exercises at the site which the authors believe would leave members of the public and personnel working at the site at risk in the event of an accident.
