CALAIS - focus on UK Border Agency, call for actions this Wednesday

What is about to happen in Calais is not a matter 'for the French', it's part of a coordinated European approach to curbing migration. The responsibility for the situation facing migrants in Calais rests partly with the UK Border Agency, as well as the wider UK government, whose wars many people in Calais are trying to escape. For example, many Afghans in Calais talk of the UK as "my enemy's enemy", ie against the Taliban. But it's all fucked up. So they come to seek shelter in the UK.

Lesvos No Border camp is banging on the walls of fortress europe

Pagani concentration camp The No Border camp in Lesvos is scoring some real victories for the migrants who arrive here and are detained in horrific conditions in the infamous Pagani detention centre following the release of over two hundred migrants . We haven't closed this hellhole down but pressure is building . We want to force Greece to respect asylum rights and the free movement of migrants and to refuse its role as Europe's border guard and all terrible abuses and deaths of migrants that entails . Yesterday 22 refugees avoided having to be detained and are now at an open centre with decent living conditions.

Numbers thin on ground in Calais, please come if you can

In the last couple of days numbers of people monitoring and intervening against police attacks on migrants have reduced. If you are thinking of coming, or want to find out more, please contact us now or have a look at the blog to see what you can do in Calais. There are many roles, doesn't have to involve face-to-face with cops! Hanging out with migrants often reaps rewards in building relationships, finding out what is really going on and is appreciated as simple, but effective, help can be provided - sorting out lighting for squats, improving nutrition for a pregnant woman, working in the same internet cafe so police back off, basic medic work...

Policing with "dignity" in Calais

Calais Palestinian 'jungle' As Immigration Minister Besson announced last night that he would provide free showers to migrants (four of them for 120-1800 people) as a measure to treat the scabies epidemic (showers do not treat scabies, which he knows being a former doctor) and demanding that the local authority support this work for "as long as it takes" (the same local authority that in July refused to allow humanitarian associations to set up showers), this photo show the reality of the "dignified" treatment of migrants in Calais that Besson has been infamously quoted as saying.

Intervention prevents police attack - Come help turn the tide in Calais

This felt like a real practical prevention of police attempts to hassle, arrest and quite clearly attack migrants in broad daylight in the centre of Calais in front of tourists and Calaisiens. This was made possible by our numbers increasing only slightly today, so come to Calais and continue the work to support migrants here. Lots of recent info elsewhere on www.calaismigrantsolidarity.wordpress.com

Forced photographs of all migrants in Calais 'jungle'

*Wednesday 29th July (12.30pm)

Around 9.00am this morning police surrounded the Pashtun (Afghan) 'jungle' and they forced all migrants to be photographed one by one and in groups.

"There are always CRS (riot) police coming to the 'jungles' in groups of about 20 at a time. Some sneak in through the trees, and then everyone is shouting 'police in the jungle'"

Thursdays are a common day for increased police raids so this may be a preparation.
