Capt (Inf) Hartono

Operations officer, Dili district military command (Pasi Ops, Kodim 1627)

Hartono (serial no. 1910024681267) was in charge of a military detachment providing security to Bishop Belo’s house when the house was attacked on 6 September 1999. In the judgment against his superior LtCol Sujarwo in December 2002, the Indonesian trial judge said Hartono had told Sujarwo that Bishop Belo wanted the detachment withdrawn so he could hold a mass, and that militias attacked shortly after the withdrawal.[1]

Is this the same Captain Hartono who was mentioned in a 1996 human rights report? A series of arrests and disappearances occurred in Same between February and April 1996, by soldiers under the command of a Captain Hartono, evidently a Kopassus officer.[2]
