INDYMEDIA UK PRESS RELEASE: 22/04/00
immediate release

UNFILTERED - LIVE AND DIRECT - RAW REPORTING

www.indymedia.org.uk

For the first time in the UK members of the public will be able to broadcast live and direct from the streets using readily identifiable mobile facilities during Mayday 2000.

At the Guerrilla Gardening events (meeting Parliament Square, 11am May 1st) the public will get their chance to put across their own views using public access terminals which utilise the latest mobile communications technology and sustainable eco-friendly energy (bicycle powered generators).

This 'Street Media Project' will allow participants to articulate their opinions via video, audio, still pictures and text, with the results being instantaneously broadcast to a global audience through the indymedia.org.uk website.

The reporting of Mayday is the first collaborative project of IndyMedia UK, an evolving network of media professionals, web enthusiasts, designers and DIY media experts. Inspired by the impressive US-based radical journalists' collectives which covered the anti-WTO protests in Seattle and the anti-IMF protests in Washington, IndyMedia UK is now another node of a growing global movement of alternative media.

Given the recent reports that the police operation planned for Mayday will be one of the biggest for thirty years, the independent reporting mechanisms may be even more essential for gaining an accurate picture of events as they unfold.
