football report

150 people bathed in glorious sunshine for the Mayday anti-capitalist footie and picnic. 9 teams, in the end, decided to take the 7-a-side challenge; Sons of Emil, Butterfield Dynamos, Between the Lines, Bharet’s Dream Team, Camley Street Rowdies, North South Divide, last years winners- Stockwell Diablos, Brighton Bombers aka Schnews and techno outfit Poodle Chaos. We’ve heard the boys in blue felt all left out ‘cos they hadn’t been invited to submit a team. Although the idea of renacting May ’68 on the pitch was tempting (for both sides!) the cops (2 vans full of heavies) had to console themselves with frying in the midday heat and taking photos and videoing our collective football talent. Next time DC Todd get your own ball and piss off somewhere else to play.

The football, meanwhile, was fast and furious....at the start!, but with the sun beating down games slowed up. The first casualties were previous winners the Diablos who skulked off not having made the semis...the first time out of 5 tournaments! maybe with their minds on the Bluebirds do-or-die mission at Stoke the next day!!

The semis pitted together the top 2 teams from both groups. The Camley Street Rowdies pitted their passion against favourites Bhart’s Dream Team with their casual Rio beach style, roared on by a partisan pro-Rowdy crowd. The Rowdies battled fiercely but eventually succumbed to the silky skills of the Dream Team with a 2-1 defeat. The 2nd semi with Between the Lines and North South Divide end in a 2-1 defeat for the North South Divide and saw old time winners Between the Lines have a 2nd chance of glory.

So there they were the 2 favourites face to face...BTL bolstered it has to be said by a couple of ringers and BDT who looked by now to be the best team. But cometh the hour cometh the hero. Looney Left and BTL star Tommy Baldwin rose to glory with 2 goals in a minute. Suddenly it was alll over. The Dream Team were on the back foot for the first time and couldn’t claw it back...the dream became a nightmare...Hail the new Loonies BTL are champs!!!BTL went on to win the quiz too, they know far too much about football trivia!.

The wooden Spoon trophy goes to Sons of Emil who should just do better next time. Their best advice from a 13 yr old kid was ‘just don’t play football’. Butterfields were the best turned out this year and Schnews went home with at least one victory under their belts! Best banner idea has to go to Camley Street Rowdies for ‘If I can’t play football it’s not my revolution’!

Meanwhile the kids had been playing softball and footie and a casual small mass kickabout had...er...kicked about. Lots of people drank, ate, shouted and got burnt. Brilliant!

As someone said recently, football brings together more than it divides...and if this means learning how to be comrades, coming together, finding different ways of doing politics, and using our passions, then although capitalism was not defeated today, ours is the victory come that glorious final.......

Keep you posted of forthcoming footie events..
