Anti-fascists report from Liverpool James Larkin march

161 | 22.07.2013 00:50 | Anti-racism | Liverpool

This is a report from the ACA Manchester group regarding the succesful James Larkin commemoration in Liverpool on Saturday and the seriously rubbish far-right opposition to it. There was an estimated 250 people on the march and a seperate smaller group of anti-fascists patrolling near-by.

Yesterday saw the annual James Larkin commemoration in Liverpool successfully proceed from its start point to the final rally with no major problems. As per tradition, there was a baying mob of loyalists/fascists on hand to add to the ambiance of the occasion by screeching a wide range of insults at those on the march. Interestingly, whilst on previous occasions there has been a solid presence of several hundred such people, yesterday saw a number of only about 50 or so, in stark contrast to the several hundred on the march itself.

Events of the last week and a half or so might seem to suggest that loyalists can tend to be a bit of a nasty lot, and of course the area's local fascists aren't exactly the sort of people you'd be chuffed to see your daughter bring home for dinner, so, according to our sources, a number of activists from both Manchester and Liverpool opted to move around the city separately from the main march with a view to keeping an eye out for any potential wrong-doers.

An early encounter with a small group of fascists showed the extent to which the 'nationalists' weren't willing to put their money where there mouth is when faced with the prospect of an hostile encounter with the opposition. This seemed to set the tone for a day of disappointment for the far right, whose pitiful numbers and primitive tactics saw them caught short on several occasions. Anti-fascist activists were able to remain mobile both on foot and by vehicle but in reality had very little to do, when faced with such a disorganised and small group of fascists who made at best half-hearted attempts to show their disapproval at the march.

A solid chunk of the fascists were arrested for a number of offences, ranging form possession of class A drugs to racially motivated insults and breach of the peace, but the march itself proceeded without problem. There was a massive police operation around the demonstration that seemed to be incredible over-kill given the level of threat. The police have however fallen firmly into the bad books of the local far-right, with the 'Scouse Nationalists' (see NF, NWI, NWFF, EDL etc) issuing a fatwa calling for the police to be targeted.

Given that the only previous 'physical exploits' of the far right in Liverpool include, amongst other incidents, targetting pacifists (and clueless) Occupy protestors several years ago, ganging up to assault lone musicians and turning up to meetings mob handed before leaving when requested to by those on the doors, we don't think Merseyside Police will be going to the mattresses just yet. We feel that perhaps the fash are trying to run before they've learn to walk, as their fighting prowess is not currently the subject of fireside tales across the land. Regardless, the day represented another sad showing from a ramshackle shit mob with serious delusions of grandeur. Well done to everyone on our side who was out on the day.

Why insult Occupy protestors?

23.07.2013 20:23

Delighted to hear the Fascists put up such a poor show, bit if you want to accuse people of being "clueless", spare a thought for the careerists and egomaniacs who repeatedly endangered the radical community in Liverpool, both politically and physically, by insisting that processions commemorating IRA veterans such as Sean Phelan and James Larkin had "nothing" to do with the IRA...

Cross hatch

Clueless?

23.07.2013 20:27

Or how about the self-styled "anti-fascist" group who posted on Facebook openly praising another IRA veteran who spent most of WW2 actively collaborating with Hitler's SS?

the agreement between the elected mayor of liverpool, and loyalists.

28.07.2013 10:48

it was agreed after several meetings between leaders of both the council, mersyside police and loyalist groups.including the leaders of armed forces groups(veterans) that the James larkin march would be allowed to march unhindered as long as it was not as previously seen,,showing direct support for murderers of civilians and security personnel, during the troubles in northern Ireland(ulster)also that the march was kept away from memorials to members of the British armed forces, that is why the parade was routed away from the city center...the parade was monitored by psni experts to see if any proscribed terrorist group was being openly advertised in order to propagate and fund raise....the loyalist community who are working class also intend to show there appreciation for the way James larkin helped all people who worked the dock yards in the old days when Ireland was still a partner in the united kingdom,as a communist and supporter of the teachings of Karl Marx,Fredric Engels, Trotsky,Lenin, ect ect ,James larkin would not have been involved in any group that used his name to further the goal of any republican group.and he was for equality not the marginalizing of a large loyalist population in Liverpool by a fascist left wing group of union leaders that have never done a days honest work.. september will bring lots of republican rent a mob (bands) from scotland and other dark places, down to liverpool, the unionists loyalists will no doubt be there to show there feelings..as will the other groups and ex services regimental groups

A march for Liverpool trade unionists?

Liverpool Echo, 16 July 2013
Liverpool Echo, 16 July 2013

A few points to ponder:

How was the parade 'successful' if the police re-routed it?

Why did most unions refuse to attend?

Why did Alec McFadden tell the Liverpool Echo say it wasn't an Irish march when it was headed by the Irish tricolour?

Why weren't prominent Liverpool Socialists (including our elected Mayor) present?

@mohamad - James Larkin

Problem with your analysis is that James Larkin was a fund-raiser for the Anti-Treaty IRA

"In September 1923 Larkin formed the Irish Worker League.... Its most prominent activity in its first year was to raise funds for imprisoned members of the Anti-Treaty IRA"

 https://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Larkin

The Anti-Treaty IRA was the IRA faction that went to war, killing their own former comrades, for the crime of not being extreme enough
