klunkin | 01.03.2008 14:35 | Social Struggles | Nottinghamshire | Sheffield

asbo squat has been given notice to quit which expired on the 27th of feb
the squat is being stripped of its copper and goddies by the "brave resident/president"
its a fitting end to a hard worked and a sometimes loved project in the city of nottingham
to those who did

Was empty4years& a vdodgy crackhouse, ASBO should have had state$$

01.03.2008 17:10

Was a great place!should have had state$$
Then it wouldnt have fallen into A's family hands, he got power when true activists moved out.He used the idea that because he thought he did all of the work he was in charge. The others moved out & kept loads of other voluntary community centres open. Anyway now we have better places in nottingham.
Shame on nottingham city homes for not giving us funds or the building when it was doing so much good for sometimes the roughest area in Nottingham.
If state wont pay us for free social work, we must takeover by elections with libertarian municipalism, direct democracy on a council level & workers councils.

Sometime resident of wildman street in last 10 years

what a shame.

02.03.2008 12:45

That due to the behavior of a couple of people the decent folk who started this off left, and an attept to reclaim it failed due to the violence and threat of violence that ensued, potentially ruining any further attempts at taking over a disused council building again, there were some real highs to that place. I beleive the mayor popped in on a visit to the area once?

How do we prevent this sort of thing from happening in the future? and should those two guys be named on here - considering that they will be looking for another place to leech on, and people we know are often cracking squats it nottingham?

ASBO, The Last Days

03.03.2008 02:58

Mr klunkin sir,

You have beaten me to it, I wanted to say something about this. Care, yes i do. Although I feel pretty cross with my community. I still want to add my thanks to all who have been involved. Fact remains they were largely un-supported.

For those that want to know what this amazing project has become, I have just added a post at ::

 http://indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/nottinghamshire/2008/03/392793.html

Please take a look, and cry.

If anybody needs a better example and role-model, to see how far we have fallen short on this, please take a look at:

Do you see what I mean?

Tash

No surprises

07.03.2008 12:49

It breaks my heart to see the reports and photos of the ASBO on this site, at its best it was a wonderful place both for its residents and all those who used the space. To those calling for names and photos of the two people who, it seems, are blamed exclusively for what has happened I would like to say that in my view the project could not have gone any other way. For some time the ASBO and all its residents and friends have been caught up in infighting and accusations from Nottingham's 'activist community' and the space was never able to live up to its potential because of this. Those people who allowed their personal differences to get in the way of all the good things that the ASBO stood for should be ashamed of themselves, I believe it is thanks to these people more than anyone that the centre has declined in the way it has. A democratic, anarchist project like ASBO can only succeed if there is a wide range of people and ideas to bring it to life and this became an impossibility thanks to the pariah status the ASBO had gained in many people's minds. All of this began long before many of the events mentioned in recent articles here.

Please don't call for anyone's blood, that is not what the ASBO project was supposed to be about. It was supposed to be about community and the community has let the place down just as the residents, past and present, have let their community down either by their actions or by inaction. I hope this will not end the idea of a squatted community project in Nottingham, but it is enough for me not to want to be involved with activism in the city any more.
