"The Film they Tried To Ban": On The Verge- Screening 23rd April

DISARMNottinghamUni | 23.03.2008 16:44 | Anti-militarism | Other Press | Repression

Despite what has been described as a nationwide attempt by the police to stop the film being shown, renowned Brighton activist group Smash EDO, working in association with SchNEWS will be bringing 'On The Verge', a documentary about their struggle, to Nottingham Uni on April 23rd.

The Documentary will be shown at 7:00pm in room C11 of the Portland Building On University Park Campus, accompanied by a speaker from Smash EDO who will take questions and be available for discussion. Entry will be FREE.

A synopsis:

"In 2004 a group of Brighton peace campaigners began to bang pot and pans outside their local arms manufacturers EDO MBM in disgust of their part in the Iraq war. This has grown into the Smash EDO campaign, which has cost the company millions, been the subject of large scale police operations and has tested the right to protest in the UK.

Using activist, police and CCTV footage plus interviews with those involved in the campaign, On The Verge tells the story of one of the most persistent and imaginative campaigns to emerge out of the UK's anti-war movement and direct action scene.

The film is already being screened on the Smash EDO Tour which has begun, and dvds will be available to buy in April - with proceeds going to Smash EDO.

Police attempts to stop On The Verge being screened has also begun. Last week the premiere screening at the Duke Of Yorks Cinema in Brighton was pulled at the last minute after police invention, and several venues due to host the tour and film have been subjected to police threats - for more see SchNEWS 625."

Please come and support Smash EDO, by seeing this film you will not only have an opportunity to learn more about the group and network but also strike a blow for activists' rights to free speech.

NB: Bear in mind that because of efforts by local authorities and police to stop the showing of the film a last minute change of venue might happen, in the event of this we will do our best to notify everyone, and we will be at the portland building to redirect you to where you need to go. Please come prepared for this.

The portland building is to be found here:

Guardian newspaper covered this today

'A misguided piece of official hysteria'

Police are going to unusual lengths to stop you seeing an obscure, low-budget documentary about an arms manufacturer in Brighton.

Steven Morris on the bizarre saga of On the Verge.
