New free newspaper for Nottingham?

Notts Krew | 27.03.2008 13:32 | Education | Indymedia | Social Struggles | Nottinghamshire

Nottingham Indymedia have been approached by a National news project with regards to putting together a Nottingham/East Midlands edition of a free newspaper.

The Mule - News With A Kick
The Mule - News With A Kick

The Mule is a not-for-profit, UK-wide project committed to using media and mass distribution as a tool for promoting social, environmental and economic justice. Currently a quarterly newspaper is produced with a circulation of 20,000 copies, handed out free, on the streets of Britain.

There are environmental concerns about adding to the great amount of paper already being circulated on a daily basis in the UK, much of which, particularly when indiscriminately thrust into the hands of rushed commuters, ends up going to landfill or incincerators. However, Notts Indymedia volunteers decided they were interested in having an alternative free newspaper in the region, which could take local issues often unreported or misreported in other media outlets to a new/wider audience. It is an opportunity to develop and promote local, independent grass roots media with the print medium.

“We hope The Mule can fill the free-paper gap between disposable culture and disposable commercial news. Something that informs people's lives and not just their journey to work.”

What is required?

Mule's Manchester offices produce the main content of the newspaper, with different regions writing their own centre pages.

Nottingham Indymedia volunteers are gathering contributions for the next edition of the Mule, due out in May. Below are some suggestions of what might go into this trial issue; however, if you have writings or ideas you wish to put forward, contact us at  notts@indymedia.org, or send submissions (max. 600 words) directly to  opprobrium@riseup.net.

- Commentary on / reaction to the Council's decision on future of Vic Baths
- About Uniforms for Library Staff
- Green Issues in the City
- Food & Climate Change
- Immigration / asylum issues in Nottinghamshire
- Fossil Fools targeted in Nottingham
- Info about your local Campaign group

In addition to needing written content, a Nottingham Mule will need an editor, a picture editor, a designer and people to distribute copies of the paper. As the paper is only quarterly, this is perhaps not such a big commitment! If you would be interested in being part of a Mule working group, please get in touch with us. The group could work within or independently of the Notts Indymedia collective; we thought we'd give it a go and get things started.

The Deadline is: 5pm - Monday 21nd April
Submissions to:  opprobrium@riseup.net

Check out the Mule online at: www.themule.info
