pics from mayday's reclaim the streets in glasgow

RECLAIM THE STREETS!

- after a low ish police presence but with lots of video cameras, the number of police rose with horses being brought in - some places like the petrol station were ringed by large numbers of police - however people reclaimed the streets with an G8 flavour with three different sound systems! The event ended with the un necessary arrest of three people as the party entered a park to finish the day...

One person is still in police custody, held over until Tuesday. The other two have been released. Appearances at the Sherrif court are on Tuesday morning and afternoon, support very much appreciated. I don't yet know the charges on the person held over, I know that one of those released is being charged with resisting arrest.

In my opinion the police just wanted to practise their snatch-and-grabs ready for the G8.

undercover cops

if you look at the last picture, you cans ee someone with a black hoodie and tight jeans on. probably an undercover cop. if the person who posted the pictures has any other picture of different angles that would be helpful to try and identify them.

oh, and a 15 year old girl was nicked while the other woman was being arrested. the police were over the top and the plunging freaked horses into a crowd with children was unbelievably idiotic ont he cops part.

I was there

Right you are. I was 2 feet away from the police when they threw the girl to the ground. Two big grown men jumping on top of a small girl.... isn't it charming?

Over the top

Hiya
well it think the RTS party was quiet fluffy. It only happened what the police allowed to happen. They just used their tactics and had the control and the power over the situtation all the time. Its fine if you reclaimed the street than but i dont think so. Lets impress them and show some more meaningfull l impact next time.

Solidarity to everyone who ended up in costudy and jail.

Get organized.

doesnt matter

Glasgow carnival is not an RTS

05.05.2005 10:46

As far as I understood it Glasgow Carnival is not an RTS as such. It is not aimed to reclaim the streets as suc or to protest against car use and it is not that explicably political - it is just a very nice fluffy party on may the first where families can bring teir kids to, the punks can drink, others dance and the local course is usually taking out their photography students for picturing the costumes.

It is not and as never been particularly confrontational or political, in fact, this year's seemed to be a lot more political than usual, and to say the truth, that is fine with me, as the political demos take place in different ways, aims and purpose. Glasgow MayDay is quite fine as it is, with everybody knowing it is usually a relaxed, easy and fluffy mayday celebration.

For the last years, the people who wanted more exciting and confrontational actions went usually to London,
and I don't think it is fair for people coming up to Glasgow to try to change the carnival into something
wich it is not or demanding it to adapt to their visions. In fact this behaviour is quite
a bit patronising.

in reply to the above comment, i just wanted to say that while the glasgow carnival may not be as radical as some of the others, it is still deffinately politically motivated. One of the arrested was due to trying to move the march to a main road to further block traffic, another was for "Attempted rescue" (who names these charges?) when the first was arrested. both of these people were local, and in general i din't see much of a difference between this glasgow RTS and those on previous years. isn't it possible to have a good time while also making a political statement?
