Climate Chaos meets economic chaos - report on a discussion in Leeds.

14-02-2009 23:37

I went to an interesting meeting last week and as Leeds faces up to the collapse of neo-liberalism with a lot of meetings and events happening, I thought it would be useful if people started to report back so we can get an overall picture of what's possible.

We're pleased to inform you that 140 MPs have now signed up in support of EDM 428 which calls on the government to abandon plans to privatise Royal Mail and the Post Office. Please continue to lobby MPs who've not yet signed up. We must urgently get new MPs to sign up, in order to keep up the pressure on the government to think again its proposals for privatisation of post services.

Climate Action: Too Important for the Politicians

07-02-2009 15:45

On 23rd January I went to a climate question time at Leeds Civic Hall organised by Oxfam as part of their role in the Stop Climate Chaos coalition. The panel was pretty high level;

Hilary Benn, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
Robert Goodwill, Shadow Roads Minister for Transport
Richard Brett, Liberal Democrat and Co-Leader of Leeds City Council
Martin Kirk, Oxfam’s Head of Campaigns

It’s usual in these things for there to be a load of party point scoring – including generous helpings of logical and factual errors – but the balance is somewhat redressed by points from the audience.

07-02-2009 09:28

Organised by Earth First activists in collaboration with Calderdale community group Treesponsibility we will be based in Hebden Bridge in Calderdale. If you fancy a weekend of hard but satisfying work planting native woodland combined with good food and socialising put the weekend of the 13-15th March in your diary.

A call out for common actions against the construction of a new nuclear power st

04-02-2009 09:27

Present-day Belarus is a post soviet country, on which territory a regime, police state in form and neoliberal in essence, fortified its position. For already 14 years the country is run by one and the same person Alexander Lukashenko, a populist at the beginning of his governing and openly pursuing antisocial reforms now.
The freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly is not about our country. These basic values as well as the political opposition are suppressed. Peaceful gatherings dispersions, political trials, preventive detentions all this has become a norm of political practice in Belarus.

31-01-2009 21:26

Natoinal Theatre 21 Jan
