Save ESOL! March and Rally 3rd March 2007

On Saturday 3rd March 2007 Tyneside Community Action for Refugees (TCAR) joined with Newcastle College Student Union and ESOL staff and students to organise a march and rally against the Labour government's proposed cuts to funding for ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). Under the proposed changes, from September 2007 asylum seekers will be totally excluded from English classes, and other will be expected to pay, effectively excluding many low paid migrant workers.

Thank you to everyone who came to the emergency demonstration for the Erdogan family this morning. We held a lively protest outside the Government Offices and then handed in our demands to a member of staff (the director of the Government Offices North East was 'in a board meeting').

On May 3rd demonstrations and rallies against NHS privatisation were organised across country. At 10am, before the TUC-organised indoor rally in Leeds city centre, Leeds Keep Our NHS Public erected a 'for sale' sign in front of the Leeds General Infirmary, which is at risk of being sold off as prime city centre land.
