Guantanamo shackles made by Hiatt of Birmingham

Hugh Warwick | 08.09.2005 14:58 | Repression | Birmingham

Hiatt of Birmingham manufacture the shackles used in Guantanamo Bay. Their factory was visited by Seize the Day, who performed their song, the Shackle Shuffle, along with Mark Thomas, Clive Stafford Smith of Reprieve, MP Lynne Jones and Abubaker Deghayes, brother of Guantanamo inmate Omar Deghayes.

Abubaker Deghayes' brother, Omar, is on hunger strike in Guantanamo Bay. He has just started his 5th week without food. He may die soon. People like Clive Stafford Smith of Reprieve are trying to save the lives of many people held there - people who's only reminder of home are the shackles that bind them - shackles that say, 'Hiatts made in England'. I think that we should all be ashamed that a company that first made its fortune supplying for the slave trade should still be operating today.
