Crown postal workers walk out

IMCista | 16.07.2007 23:57 | Workers' Movements | Birmingham

Crown Post Office workers went on strike today over the Post Office Ltd plans to close further Crown Post Offices (the larger branches usually situated on busy high streets) and transfer services to WH Smith stores, with the loss of up to 1,500 jobs, as well as plans for a pay freeze and a pay cut for 80% of staff. The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has announced a similar strike action on Thursday, 19 July, from 6am till mid-day.

In Birmingham, out of the 25 people who work at the post office in Victoria Square, only 5 didn't walk out (3 CWU members and 2 non-members), but the post office operated almost as normal as managers were brought in to do the work.

Again, members of the West Midlands branch of the Industrial Workers of the World union (IWW) leafleted outside the post office on New Street despite the rain and the fact that the post office itself was open. The leaflet expressed solidarity with the posties in their struggle and asked the public to support them.
