Birmingham students take action against RBS

People & Planet Birmingham | 18.10.2007 20:14 | Climate Chaos | Birmingham

On Monday 15th October over 30 students from the University of Birmingham flooded their campus NatWest branch (who are wholly owned by the Royal Bank of Scotland) in protest at their disproportionate and unsustainable funding of oil and gas projects and the contribution this is making to climate change as part of the 'National day of local action against the Royal Bank of Scotland'.

There isn't enough room to fit everyone in!

At around 1pm a group of around 30 students from the University of Birmingham People & Planet society, some dressed as oil workers and bankers, entered the University of Birmingham NatWest branch. Once inside the 'bankers', imitating RBS's own 'Oil and Gas team', gave a sarcastic presentation entitled 'Climate Change; We make it happen' to staff and customers of the branch, which equated the banks high 'embedded emissions' with high turnover, dismissing the environmental impacts. Afterwards the group set off round campus giving mock career presentations in social areas to large numbers of bemused staff and students.

The action was one of over 20 actions taken as part of the 'National day of local action against the Royal Bank of Scotland' which was called by London Rising Tide. You can find a full breakdown of the days events here:  http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2007/10/383812.html .

Sounds like you got your point across well then lol. No worries, i think most people are aware that P&P are a student subcluture that has got unbelievably out of hand.

Sounds like rational young people doing something to safeguard their future against the interests of the selfish older generation.

Get to fuck with your cynical comments!

I'm not being too cynical mate. I think its worth having a think about what your actually trying to achieve with a campaign such as this, i have no doubt that most people involved in P&P groups are very well meaning people.
I guess the intention of the campaign is to make the more people aware of what the RBS are up to but if the tactics your using are confusing people maybe you should have a re-think.But anyway, what would come from making more people aware of this specific problem? People are already very aware that climate change is happening and do nothing about it. I think your going in the wrong direction with media stunts.
I'm not sure what you mean by "younder people trying to safe guard interests against the selfish older generation". There are other avenues for bringing these changes, and hey, guess what, some of them involve a bit of analysis rather than none...
