$tarbuck$-Brum Union bustin' Protest

D | 08.07.2008 14:28 | Globalisation | Workers' Movements | Birmingham

Saturday 5th July- as part of an international day of action against the latest illegal sackings of union activists in Michigan, USA and Seville, Spain, the West Midlands IWW helped organise a protest picket outside the main Starbucks store in Birmingham. The general public were very supportive of the protest. We were surprised how much people hated starbucks. The store manager hated the fact it the store was half empty, just like their tills.

An Injury to one...
An Injury to one...

is an injury to all!
is an injury to all!

On Thursday 24th April, Monica, a barista in the central Seville branch of Starbucks for 18 months, was fired without notice for ‘creating problems’. She had been active in organising with the CNT Union and defending workers rights. The store manager had told her on several occasions that she must have nothing to do with unions. The CNT is now demanding her reinstatement.
Barely a month later, Michigan USA, Starbucks fired barista Cole Dorsey. Cole had worked at the Grand Rapids branch for 2 years. He was also active in the IWW Starbucks Workers Union. The National Labour Relations Board in the US has already made the firm rehire two sacked workers in 2006 and are looking at Starbucks latest violation.
Starbucks marketing presents the company as welcoming and friendly. In reality they ruthless union busters determined to stop workers organising for better pay and conditions.

Let $tarbucks know that their attitude to workers is out of order:
