Contra-fascist reminder: Birmingham, this Saturday.

White, Black, Claret and Blue | 06.08.2009 11:02 | Anti-racism | Social Struggles | Workers' Movements | Birmingham

A reminder of the need this Saturday to oppose fascists marching in Birmingham, with meet-up advert.

As previously reported on this newswire [ http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/birmingham/2009/07/433842.html], a certain militant fascist grouping have plans to demonstrate in Birmingham, this Saturday 8th August, in, I believe, the city centre.

Commentators point out that this is the first time fascists will have dared to demonstrate in this city for 30 years.

In this reporter's opinion it would be wonderful if Brummies were to UNITE for this and see the fascists off, regardless of any relatively trivial affiliations or differences, and see the fascists off. Can they really hope to march in Brum this weekend and get away with it?

One widely advertised central meet-up for folk willing to oppose the fascists is:
5PM, HIGH STREET, OUTSIDE WATERSTONES/ZAVVIS. In other words, where the High St meets the Bull Ring.

Normal safety procedures apply. This is said to be a militant group.

So, here's to a successful repulsion of this group, and a fascist-free England.

Word has it that the organisers, English Defence League/Casuals United, will be marching reading "No to the BNP, No to the NF, No to C18" --

What we will see on Saturday is a nationalist demonstration opposing sharia law in the UK. However many who will join that demo will be opposed to ALL muslims, will also be supportive of the British Army in Afghanistan and will counter-pose the Islamic Religion with Christianity. Though I don't see it as being militant fascist "movement" with a clear political agenda, it is complementary to most political parties in the far-right including BNP/NF and other white nationalists. That is the danger, that it is a recruitment ground for these tendencies.

The Lefts strategy is to denouce them as "Nazis" not because they think that they are Nazis but it will dissuade people to be involved in it. This is a tactic used against the BNP which has FAILED. Almost 1 million people voted for the "Nazi" BNP.

A better strategy would be to stop the real fascist elements gaining a presence within the demo, target known organisers and stop them influencing it. Secondly, attempt to engage with people on and off the demo with other issues related to other real threats like joblosses, the commercialisation of football/sport, expenses scandal, even military recruitment in low-income working class areas.

where women are very well integrated & taking openly leading roles in most areas without any bhurks.
Plus yep definetely weed out the real nazis amongst there ranks& take the piss, confrontation especially in a city centre is likely to go pete tong.
If they attack though of course& they cant be citizens arrested, self defence is no offence.

Fundamentalism is sad, unless your in the church of the militant elvis or The Church of Life After Shopping

Let's hope the UAF don't ruin the counter-demo with their usual chanting through megaphones about concentration camps etc.

The BFF will be there and as you say should be targetted for ridicule. WM and his teenage followers are comedy gold.

Wouldn't it be a good think for some decent class warriors and football hooli's to give the BFF/NF/Fascists a send off, then we can have a chat about how best to defend the interest of all working class people.

Fuck Fascism.
Fuck Islam.
Fuck Capitalism.

Don't think they'll be having any more marches in Birmingham in a hurry.

752 confirmed attendees on facebook, in reality 30 boneheads standing outside the council house.

And apparently most of them got battered.

What a shame.
