As part of the fourth day of protest in solidarity with sacked union organizer Alberto Durango, West Mids IWW took part in a demonstration outside the Birmingham offices of UBS.
UBS bank earned $2.3 billion profit last year.
They also outsourced their cleaning to Lancaster Cleaning Services, who cut the pay of their cleaning staff by over 10%.
Their top paid banker earned a salary of £8.3 million last year.
Although the cleaning staff won pay increases in a successful living wage campaign in 2008 – UBS and Lancaster are now sacking union organizers that seek to defend this victory.
There is an international campaign to reinstate the sacked trade unionist, Alberto Durango, who was sacked for defending low paid cleaners.
Today is the 4th international day of protest in support of Alberto.
In solidarity, West Mids IWW demonstrated today, Friday, at 5.00pm, to show UBS (Union Busting Scum!) that we won't stand for banks bullying the low paid and sacking effective trade unionists.
The demonstration was well received by passing workers on their way home - most of whom were completely amazed that a company paying a salary of over £8 million to one person could at the same time cut cleaners' pay by over 10% and sack their trade union organizer at the same time!
As we pointed out, over the megaphone, "they're just a bunch of ... bankers!".
An injury to one is an injury to all!
