Stop Shopping - prison labour issue

Ange Taggart | 03.12.2003 21:57 | Sheffield

Next time you buy a saucepan from Wilkinson's Hardware store you might find the message inside "enjoy your porridge", with a leaflet asking you to boycott Wilko’s. Nottingham has seen a series of actions targeting Wilkinson’s demanding it stops using compulsory prison labour.

Keeping Prices Low

The firm has been accused by the political group Campaign Against Prison Slavery (CAPS), of using prison inmates as "slave labour" who earn little more than £1 a day.

"We are already finding that this is a highly controversial issue with the public, and we have had a great deal of support. These are capitalist companies who care about the illusion of self-image, they don’t want to be linked to slavery, they don’t want customers boycotting them, and they certainly don’t want people picketing outside their stores." Mark Barnsley, Campaign Against Prison Slavery

A series of protests outside Wilkinson's stores have taken place across the country. More Nottingham actions are planned in the run up to Christmas on the 10th and 13th December.

PERSONAL OPINIONS

Prisoners should not be made to work for captalist companies that aim for profits but for the good of the community and them selves - if anything.

What are prisoners rights? Who looks after them? Do prisoners (of anti-social related crimes) owe anything to the community? Should this be attributed during centecing or ordered by the prison wardens? What powers do prison wardens actually have?

I would be glad to hear from you.
