Fash Bashed In Barnsley, Splash!!

Rudie | 30.05.2004 14:44 | Anti-racism | Sheffield

29th May 2004. Bnp March meets serious opposition and is dispersed by the Law.

In the week that saw Mark "do you want to see my botty" Collet's motor get trashed, Bnp muppets in Barnsley got a bit of a shock as they tried to march in the town for the first time ever.

Early on in the day a small but committed group of anti-fascists confronted three Bnp members. These three toilets had their banner in a bag however our heroes were unable to retrieve the offending article as the fash ran straight to the nearest pig van squealling for assistance.

The good news is that one of our intrepid few managed to spank a retreating rightist square on the back of the head. As the humbled hater dropped to his knees he recieved a well timed boot straight up his 'weeto'.

After standing around listening to Trots telling them to re-elect the fascists already in power instead of the BNP, as well as hearing some sincere messages of anti-racism, anti-imperialism and other good stuff the group noticed the fash re-grouping a little further downt' road.

Establishing that the correct military term for their planned manouvere was a 'bridgehead' our team resolved not to let the fascists pass when they started to march.

However the po-leese had different ideas and demanded from high on their horses that all decent anti-fascist folk vacate the city centre or suffer the full punitive force of the law for breach of the peace.

Informed by the filth that the Fash would not be allowed to march for fear of public disorder our heroes, sort of satisfied that there was little else to do except get nicked, retired to the boozer.

Over pints they congratulated themselves and shared their dreams and aspirations of a world ruled by none with freedom and cooperation unlimited.

...I'd like to slip in a quick "Well Done" before the thread gets clogged up with BNP sympathisers and nerdy liberals whining about the "attack on free speech" posed by such direct action.

Well done! Frankly if people want to roam the streets stirring up racial hatred then fuck 'em!

"If you can't convince a fascist, acquaint his head with the pavement" - Leon Trotsky

Did Trotsky really say that?

Well done...but not all people who are going to be elected are fascists by the way - seems like typical Anarchist bullshit...

not just anarchist bullshit

30.05.2004 18:22

sounds like quite a sensible comment on the Respect/Unite against Fascism campaign which centres on voting for Respect if it won't threaten Labour on the one hand, and anyone who is not BNP on the other. This Labour government has carried out acts of mass racist terror that the BNP can only dream about

what did trotsky say?

30.05.2004 19:05

first off: well done to the barnsley folks! that's the way to do it...

i've heard the trotsky quote before, but i've never been able to track it down. so i've been doing a bit of searching.

search 1: marxist internet archive

 http://www.marxists.org/

a search in the trotsky archive for the word "pavement" yielded 12 hits, none of which match. i *think* that the trotsky archive is complete in english as far as written stuff is concerned.

search 2: google [spit]

a fair few references to trotsky, fascists and pavements. some interesting reading [though not all], but not one gave a reference for when, where or how trotsky said/wrote it.

so the jury's out, swaying towards urban myth as far as i'm concerned. unless it's on one of leon's bootleg albums i haven't heard yet :-)

btw, i would love definitive proof one way or the other...

What Trotsky said

30.05.2004 23:23

Trotsky did not say 'if you cannot convince a fascist, acquaint his head with the pavement'. Such a piece of advice could only encourage individual acts of terror against fascists, which are no real substitute for mass action of the working class against racism and fascism. He did though say something along these lines in the context of praising large numbers of workers smashing a fascist demonstration in this way.

Getting ordinary working class people to vote against the BNP in these elections may not be as 'romantic' or 'exciting' as a few people taking on the fash, but if we succeed in thwarting the BNP's plans for a breakthrough in Yorkshire in this way then it will be worthwhile. 'Trots' in general are not supporting Labour in these elections, but are trying to build a socialist alternative to New Labour by supporting Respect Coalition candidates. However, ultimately, it is the collective self activity of millions of working class people outside Parliament that is going to change the world, and bring down a system based on racism and fascism.

hi

do you think this last gut is joking? is he on crack or do people still think this " working class mass action" nonsense is connected with reality in britain?

The 'Working Class' is anyone who HAS to sell his labour power to survive. So the 'Working Class' is in a HUGE majority in this country. This is MORE relevant now than it was in Marx's, and even Trotsky's day.

So yes, the above post is serious.

Bakunin was an anti-Semite, denouncing the Marxists as a “Jewish German” conspiracy to destroy the labour movement and calling for the annihilation of all Jews.

Look, let's talk about the subject, and stop this Anarchist/Communist fighting!

Source please

Bakunin along with most of the left at the time was certainly prone to anti-semitism. But the 'annihilation of all Jews' thing seems to be something made up a few years ago by a British marxist hack in that despite looking I've been unable to find anything even resembling this in any of Bakunins writings or correspondance.

Now of course there is a rather strong tradition of slander against Bakunin from the Marxist movement going back to the bearderd one himself (even when Bakunin had died he spread rumors that he was a Russian agent!). But in the interests of killing that particular one could you provide a source for the 'annihilation of all Jews' claim. And I mean sourced to something Bakunin wrote not 'some marxist wrote in a book that Bakunin wrote this somewhere or another'.

anti-semitism and the left

11.06.2004 14:46

Not sure about that Bakunin quote, but there are plenty of deeply unpleasant anti-semitic things he said in correspondence that are well documented, conceded even by his apologists. He referred to the 'parasitic Jewish nation' etc etc. Proudhon was far more virulent in his hatred of Jewish people though. His diaries are full of noxious quasi-Nazi tripe. But Trots should think twice about their own heroes; round the time of the Social Democrat split Lenin's notes attempted to make specious connections between Trotsky and Martov's opposition to his authoritarianism and their semitic ethnicity. Very similar to Bakunin's tactics against Marx. But then, anyone familiar with Max Nomad's Apostles of Revolution will be aware of Leninism's debt to Bakunin so perhaps we shouldn't be surprised. Obviously, opposing Leninism and anarchism should be on the grounds of their complete lack of use for modern leftists, not on the prejudices of their founding fathers, but that's another thread...

This reminds me of the famous monty python moment....
"theres a trotskyite up my trouser leg..." etc...

anyway enjoy your distance from the working class reality as it shall remain so untill you can forget your dogmatic ideology.

Trotsky and the pavement

15.06.2004 13:38

That Trotsky quote comes from the BBC comedy drama "GBH", about Trotskyists in Liverpool, loosely based on the career of Derek Hatton.

The Trotskyist academic that the Hatton-clone wheedled into the campaign made that quote, and attributed it to Trotsky. I've been hearing people quote it, for and against Trotsky, ever since. :)

trotsky had a point....

23.06.2004 08:40

I've always known this quote as 'Teach a man once then acquaint his head with the pavement', a sort of Confucious-esque line with a viscious streak...I've never heard or read it with the fascist slant, though that may have been part of the context in which it was said/wrote. Its always been one of my favourite Trotsky lines and i'd be gutted if it really was invented for some BBC crapu-drama!
